  • Patent number: 6031147
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for reducing the malodor associated with disposable absorbent products intended for the absorption of body fluids. The method involves applying to the absorbent product, prior to its use, an effective amount of a surface-active agent having a hydrophilic/lipophilic balance of less than about 12. The surface-active agent is effective to reduce the odor of urine. Also disclosed is a disposable absorbent product intended for the absorption of body fluids, which disposable absorbent product includes an absorbent structure including a water-swellable, generally water-insoluble, hydrogel-forming polymeric absorbent material, a covering material, and an effective amount of a surface-active agent having a hydrophilic/lipophilic balance of less than about 12. The surface-active agent is effective to reduce the odor of urine.

  • Patent number: 4026932
Abstract: A method for the preparation of aqueous solutions of anionic polyelectrolytes by combining a stream of a high solid content alkenoic acid-alkyl acrylate latex with a stream of aqueous alkali metal hydroxide, mixing the combined streams under low shear conditions and heating the mixture to produce a polyelectrolyte solution. The use of these steps avoids the formation of high viscosity mixtures or rubber masses which are difficult, if not impossible, to further process into the desired polyelectrolyte solution.

  • Patent number: 3993616
Abstract: Water swellable absorbent articles, made from polyelectrolytes, containing free carboxylic groups, together with methods for their preparation, and a composition useful to make said articles are disclosed. The composition contains N-substituted amide compounds as the crosslinking agents. The articles are crosslinked by heating and/or removing substantially all of the water from the precursor composition. The absorbent articles are useful as surgical sponges, diapers, tampons, meat trays, bath mats and the like.

  • Patent number: 3954721
Abstract: Water-insoluble, water-swellable fibers adapted to bind aqueous fluids such as body exudates are prepared by spinning fibers from an organic solvent solution of a copolymer of maleic anhydride with suitable vinyl aromatic monomers. The copolymer solution also contains a small amount of a polyfunctional cross-linking agent such as an adduct of glycerine with ethylene oxide and propylene oxide which reacts to cross-link and plasticize the copolymer chains when the fibers are heated and dried. The cross-linked copolymer fibers are then rendered hydrophilic and water-swellable by reaction with ammonia.
