  • Patent number: 6690531
Abstract: Data recording tape is passed along guides and past a read/write head. Sensors detect the position of the tape and adjust the guides and the head as a function of the position. If the tape deviates from the target tape path, a controller moves a guide to steer the tape back to the target tape path, using the sensor signals. In cases of tape disturbance such as those involving rapid tape motion, an adaptive estimator uses the sensor signals to position the head to anticipate the expected position of the tape when the disturbance arrives at the head.

  • Patent number: 6564614
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for detecting leaks in riser and lid assemblies, a difference in pressure between the inside of the riser and cover assembly and the outside is created and monitored to insure that no leaks exist. Preferably, a vacuum is created on the inside of the riser and cover assembly. This vacuum is then monitored for a set period of time to insure that the total change in pressure does not exceed a threshold. In a highly preferred embodiment, an apparatus automatically creates the desired vacuum and then isolates a vacuum gauge to monitor the vacuum in the riser. Method for isolating a leak are also presented in the event that a leak is detected.

  • Patent number: 5851237
Abstract: The invention provides compositions and methods for the oxidative coloring of human hair. The compositions of the invention contain as a primary dye intermediate a 1-(4-aminophenyl) pyrrolidine, or a cosmetically acceptable salt thereof. The compositions may also contain at least one other primary intermediate and conventional coupling compounds, in addition to an oxidizing agent and other components typically used in oxidative hair dye preparations. Preferred dye intermediates in the compositions of the invention include 1-(4-aminophenyl) pyrrolidine and 1-(4-amino-3-methylphenyl) pyrrolidine, or cosmetically acceptable salts thereof, which produce intense neutral colors when used in admixture with a suitable coupling agents, such as 3-aminophenol, in conventional hair dye base formulations.

  • Patent number: 5450257
Abstract: A head-track orienting system for use in magnetic recording tape drives is disclosed which automatically corrects for misalignment between the head assembly and a recorded servo track on the tape. Using a servo control loop, the system calculates head-track alignment error during operation of the tape drive and either pivots the head assembly or adjusts the tape cartridge to compensate for the error. Transverse head-track positioning mechanisms are also included in the system to locate and maintain a centered position of the heads on the servo track.

  • Patent number: 5280402
Abstract: A mechanism for accurately following the center of a track includes a voice coil, or a voice coil and stepper motor in combination. The voice coil and stepper motor combination operate to variably position a recording head transversely with respect to the width of the recording tape. The mechanism enables head positioning with very close tolerances due to the ability of the voice coil to finely position the head very accurately on the center of a track.

  • Patent number: 5261766
Abstract: Vertical bore holes are constructed for municipal sanitary landfills by drilling or otherwise excavating holes of large dimension to substantial depth, in virtually all known soil conditions however variable. They can be excavated well below the groundwater table, then lined with an impermeable or other permanent liner. This allows the landfill area to be much more efficiently used for the storage of various waste products. Solid organic waste other than cellulosics can be anaerobically fermented to methane and compost. A central core shaft is used as gas removal vent and conduit. After methane generation and removal the resulting compost is removed for use as soil nutrients. This system fully complies with the Environmental Protection Act and other regulations now in force in North America. Air, soil, groundwater, and surface water pollution and contamination are eliminated as all waste storage is contained within its own environment below natural grade.
