Patent number: 6796254Abstract: The order in which panels 13 are to be quilted, the amount of quilting-induced shrinkage, and the amount of crop between adjacent panels 13 are stored in a machine readable file 13 for use in operating a print line 10. Such information 13 is printed or otherwise placed on the material 11 at the print line 10 so as to be readable by a sensor 22 at a quilting station, where the information 13 is read and used to control the quilter 21. Panels 15 are quilted according to a schedule and in batches in the most efficient manner, and panels are cut according to information read from records on the material. Shrinkage is compensated for and appropriate crops are made between panels. The printing line prints series of panels on a web 11 in rolls 14 that can be fed, last-printed panel first, into the quilter.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2003Date of Patent: September 28, 2004Assignee: L&P Property Management CompanyInventors: James Bondanza, James T. Publication number: 20030183147Abstract: A machine readable file is prepared for use in operating a print line that produces a layer of material having a series of panels printed thereon for quilting. The file includes information on the order in which panels are to be quilted, the amount of shrinkage that will occur to a panel during quilting and the amount of crop to be made between adjacent panels following quilting. Such information is placed, preferably printed, onto the material at the print line. Such information is readable by a sensor at a quilting station, which reads the information and controls a quilter to quilt in accordance with the information. Panels are then quilted in accordance with a schedule and in batches in a most efficient manner. A panel cutter is also controlled by information read from records on the material. Shrinkage is also compensated for and appropriate crops are made between panels.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2003Publication date: October 2, 2003Inventors: James Bondanza, James T. Patent number: 5603270Abstract: A quilting method and apparatus in which ticking or facing material changes are effected, preferably under the control of a programmed computer or controller, by automatically retrieving, and preferably also splicing onto a web, selected materials from a facing material supply. The controller preferably also controls a quilter in the stitching of selected patterns along a web, and coordinates the positions of the patterns and material splices between the patterns, in response to measurements and calculations of dimensional changes between infeed webs, quilted tensioned web and cut untensioned panels. Storage compartments are provided for a variety of facing materials, preferably rolls thereof. A retrieval mechanism moves webs selected by the programmed controller to a feed position adjacent the quilter.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1995Date of Patent: February 18, 1997Assignee: L&P Property Management CompanyInventors: M. Patent number: 5544599Abstract: A quilting machine includes a multiple needle quilter with a panel cutter located in-line therewith and downstream thereof and having an accumulator therebetween. A programmable controller operates the quilter to stitch a programmed series of one or more patterns on a web. A feed roller angular encoder measures the quilted web length fed under tension to the accumulator. A detector signals when the accumulator is full, whereupon the controller causes web to be fed from the accumulator to the panel cutter, where it passes without tension thereon toward a photo sensor. The photo sensor signals the controller which activates the cutter to sever a predetermined panel length from the web. The controller then reads information from the encoder and the accumulator detector to determine the amount of stressed quilt required to replenish the cutoff panel length.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1994Date of Patent: August 13, 1996Assignee: L&P Property Management CompanyInventors: James T. Patent number: 5505150Abstract: A multiple needle double lock chain stitch quilting machine is provided with an adjustment or calibrating system by which the positions of loopers relative to the corresponding needles of each of a plurality of sets of stitching elements of a ganged array are capable of being precisely set. A control actuator is provided by which an operator, after observing the quality of the product and stopping the machine, actuates an adjustment control system. In response to the a signal from the actuator, a motor precisely advances the stitching mechanism. A sensor monitors the stitching mechanism position, for example, by reading indicia on the needle drive shaft, and generates a position signal when the stitching mechanism precisely in the loop-take-time position of its cycle. A controller stops the motor and activates a brake in response to the position signal locking the mechanism, including the needles and loopers, in the loop-take-time position.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1994Date of Patent: April 9, 1996Assignee: L&P Property Management CompanyInventors: Michael James, James T.
