  • Patent number: 11655776
Abstract: An automobile vehicle engine includes multiple water jackets individually formed in a cast engine block proximate to successive ones of multiple cylinder bores. Multiple cast-in place transition regions are individually formed during a casting operation of the cast engine block at entrances to individual ones of the multiple water jackets. Individual ones of multiple sawcuts open into individual ones of the multiple cast-in place transition regions.

  • Patent number: 9403209
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus for reduction of gas pressure within a core, such as a sand casting core package, during a casting process in order to reduce bubble defects. Some embodiments may comprise a mold configured to receive a molten metal to create a metal casting, such as an engine block casting. The mold may comprise a mold core configured to create a cavity within the metal casting. The system may further comprise a filling device configured for delivering a molten metal into the mold for creating the metal casting. The mold core may comprise a material that is permeable to certain gases known to often result in bubble defects. The system may further comprise a vacuum configured to be coupled with the mold to reduce gas pressure within a permeable portion of the mold in order to reduce the incidence of bubble defects within the casting.

  • Patent number: 7578336
Abstract: A casting mold and method for its use to achieve in-mold modification of the casting metal is disclosed. One or more chambers are located within the casting mold's runner system. Each chamber can contain metallurgical modifiers for adjusting the chemical composition of the metal to improve the mechanical and physical properties of an article cast from the metal. One or more modifiers can be placed in the chamber(s) as the casting mold is assembled for use. As the melt is introduced to the casting mold, it passes through the chamber(s) and liquefies the modifier. Amounts of the liquid modifier, then, are carried away and become dispersed in the melt as it continues through the runner system and into the mold cavity. The metallurgical modifiers can be selected from any number of known additives or alloying elements, including strontium, among others.

  • Patent number: 6527040
Abstract: In assembly of engine block mold package, a water jacket slab core is assembled on a barrel crankcase core having a plurality of barrels on which cylinder bore liners are positioned. Some of the barrels include a core print on a distal end thereof. The water jacket slab core includes a plurality of core prints each in mating relation with a respective barrel core print and a plurality of bore liner positioning surfaces that each engage a respective distal end of a respective cylinder bore liner when the water jacket slab core is assembled on the barrels.
