  • Patent number: 5395558
Abstract: A method for molding a soft ophthalmic lens mates a male and a female portion, one having around the periphery of the optical surface a knife edge and one containing a rim bushing peripherally exterior to the knife edge so that the knife edge deformably penetrates the other portion. Excess material is expelled from the mold cavity and separated from the lens by a region of prepolymer discontinuity defined by the rim bushing is produced by using a cylindrical insert and an annular sleeve machined to have the rim bushing on the surface of one end.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 15, 1992
Date of Patent: March 7, 1995
Assignee: Johnson & Johnson Vision Products, Inc.

The two portions are mated so that the knife edge deformably penetrates the other portion. Excess material is expelled from the mold cavity and separated from the lens by a region of prepolymer discontinuity defined by the rim bushing contact area. The mold portion containing the rim bushing is produced by using a cylindrical insert and an annular sleeve machined to have the rim bushing on the surface of one end.

  • Patent number: 4878038
Abstract: Multiple embodiments of a device suitable for arrangement in a circuit for protection of components in the circuit are disclosed, the device of each embodiment including a temperature responsive electrical regulating component including a conductive polymer or ceramic material having an electrical regulating capability dependent on temperature and at least one series connected switch including trip means also responsive to temperature for opening and closing the circuit in a reliable manner, the device being adapted for connection in the circuit to be protected. The various embodiments include different arrangements of the temperature responsive electrical regulating component and the switch. Certain of the embodiments include a second series connected switch of similar construction. The conductive polymer or ceramic material can be of a variety of types for performing different electrical regulating functions within the circuit.

  • Patent number: 4598165
Abstract: A sleeve for installation on an electrical conductor for shielding the conductor with respect to the environment in which the conductor resides against electromagnetic interference (EMI). The sleeve is formed of a tubular member made of heat recoverable material and having, in the non-recovered condition, a large central opening through which the wire to be shielded can be passed. The interior of the tubular member is lined with a plurality of conductive leaves or pellicles. One circumferential margin of the pellicles is adhered to the internal surface of the tubular member and the remainder of each pellicle is unattached and remains in overlapping relationship to an adjacent pellicle. When the sleeve is positioned over a conductor to be shielded and energy is applied to the tubular member to effect its recovery, the unattached portions of the pellicles move with respect to one another as the tubular member shrinks to uniformly circumscribe the conductor with an electrically conductive shield.

  • Patent number: 4388261
Abstract: A puncture sealant package for incorporation into a pneumatic tire is formed by coextruding a puncture sealant, and a skin forming material. The ribs are formed in an initially circular package profile as chords. After flow in a sheet die, the chords form divider ribs making small angles with the encapulating skin. The compartments formed by the ribs prevent flow of the sealant toward the center of a tire.

  • Patent number: 4329052
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided to continuously monitor and measure the average size of individual foam cells contained in a foam structure, such as polystyrene foam for example, as it is being fabricated. Such an arrangement permits the prompt adjustment of process conditions and/or the concentration of nucleating agents in the extrusion system in the event the size of the individual cells in the foam structure varies from a preselected standard.

  • Patent number: 4137754
Abstract: An apparatus and method for the determination of the flow properties of thermoplastic materials in admixture with volatile liquids or other additives comprising an extruder which is employed to melt the polymer and admix therewith volatile blowing agents or additives. Subsequently the molten mixture is injected into an extrusion plastometer or rheometer for extruding the mixture, while still in molten form, through a capillary orifice in the extrusion plastometer. When volatile liquid blowing agents are admixed with the molten polymer in the extruder, an adjustable linkage is provided interconnecting the plastometer and the extruder whereby the pumping rate of the blowing agent can be variably adjusted and the blowing agent positively injected into the molten polymer within the extruder by the reciprocal motion of a piston means employed in the extrusion plastometer.
