    Abstract: A flat glass panel for use in applications requiring high visible and infrared transmittance (such as a solar panel) is made using lower cost batch materials containing iron oxide impurities. Iron oxide is known as an additive for decreasing infrared/visible transmittance of glass. Removal of iron oxide impurities from batch materials is very expensive. This invention uses common batch materials having iron oxide impurities to produce a glass with high transmittance by adding a clarifier comprised of 0.05 to 0.4 weight percent of manganese dioxide (MnO2). The optional addition of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) enhances ultraviolet blocking of the glass for protecting coatings within a solar panel from ultraviolet-induced damage.

    Abstract: A blue glass composition comprises a soda-lime-silica base and a colorant portion consisting essentially of about 0.4 to 0.65 weight percent total iron oxide, about 0.1 to 0.3 weight percent manganese oxide, and cobalt oxide in an amount effective to produce a cobalt concentration of about 0.0002 to 0.0013 weight percent (about 2 to 13 ppm). The glass is characterized by a ratio of ferrous oxide to total iron oxide between about 0.43 and 0.58. The glass composition exhibits a combination of high visible transmittance, high infrared absorption and enhanced blue coloration. This is attributed in large part to the combination of ferrous oxide and cobalt oxide and to the effect of manganese oxide in reducing iron sulfide formation and thereby avoiding amber coloration.

    Abstract: Material selected from the group consisting essentially of molybdenum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, copper, silver, potassium dichromate and iron chromite, is added during the manufacture of soda-lime-silica float glass to reduce the occurrences of nickel sulfide stone defects. Material is added in sufficient amounts such that the resulting glass is at least 0.010 wt. % selected material. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, molybdenum is added in the form of sodium molybdate such that the resulting glass is at least 0.015 wt. % molybdenum.
