Patent number: 9903387Abstract: A ring fan and shroud assembly having a fan, a shroud member, a recirculating flow member, and a plurality of curved guide vanes. The fan has a hub with a plurality of projecting fan blades and an outer ring member. The shroud member is positioned around the outer ring member. The recirculating flow member is on the shroud member and is positioned forward adjacent the outer ring member. The guide vanes are positioned within the recirculating flow member and define an inlet angle, which is nearly tangential with an outer entry diameter radial surface of the recirculating flow member, and an outlet angle that is nearly radial along an inner exit diameter of the recirculating flow member.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2013Date of Patent: February 27, 2018Assignee: BorgWarner Inc.Inventors: Jonathan B. Stagg, James W. Bailey

Patent number: 8454300Abstract: To make manifest the above noted desire, a revelation of the present invention is brought forth. A fan assembly (7) is provided including a hub (10) with a plurality of projecting fan blades (12). A recirculating flow element (18) is provided which is generally forward adjacent an outer diameter of the fan blades (12). A plurality of guide vanes (22) are positioned within the recirculating flow element (18). The guide vanes (22) have an inlet angle (24) that is nearly tangential with an outer diameter surface (15) of the recirculating flow element (18). The guide vanes (22) have an outlet angle (26) which is nearly radial along an inner diameter surface (17) of the recirculating flow element (18).Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 2009Date of Patent: June 4, 2013Assignee: BorgWarner Inc.Inventors: Jonathan Bradley Stagg, James W. Patent number: 5052817Abstract: An apparatus for testing ignitability of an initiator includes a body having a central cavity, initiator holder for holding the initiator over the central cavity of the body, an ignition material holder disposed in the central cavity of the body and having a cavity facing the initiator holder which receives a measured quantity of ignition material to be ignited by the initiator and a chamber in communication with the cavity of the ignition material and the central cavity of the body, and a measuring system for analyzing pressure characteristics generated by ignition of the ignition material by the initiator. The measuring system includes at least one transducer coupled to an oscillograph for recording pressure traces generated by ignition.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1990Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Laurence J. Patent number: 4708280Abstract: The invention is a tool and process to be used in explosive joining of tubes. The tool consists of an initiator 81, a tool form 82 and a ribbon explosive 25. The assembled tool 80 is a compact, storable and safe device suitable for explosive joining of small, lightweight tubes down to 0.20 inch in diameter. The invention is inserted into a tube 51 to be welded which tube has itself been inserted into either another tube 52 or a tube plate. A shim or standoff between the two surfaces to be welded is necessary. Initiation of the explosive inside the tube results in a high velocity, angular collision between the mating surfaces. This collision creates surface melts and collision bonding wherein electron-sharing linkups are formed.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1986Date of Patent: November 24, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator, National Aeronautics & Space AdministrationInventors: Laurence J. Bement, James W. Bailey
