Patent number: 5439965Abstract: Flame retardant and abrasion resistant crosslinkable compositions useful as insulation for wire and cable are provided. The compositions contain an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer having a vinyl ester content of 5 to 12 wt. %, a halogenated compound, antimony trioxide and an organic peroxide. Use of specific halogenated compounds, particularly brominated aromatic compounds, with low vinyl acetate content ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers yield products which are highly resistant to abrasion after crosslinking.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1993Date of Patent: August 8, 1995Assignee: Quantum Chemical CorporationInventors: Steven W. Horwatt, James W. Biggs

Patent number: 5412012Abstract: The present invention relates to flame retardant insulation and jacketing compositions useful for wire and cable products which exhibit improved adhesion to the metal conductor. This is achieved by the use of a specific stabilizer package comprised of three specific antioxidants and by varying their relative proportions. The compositions are based on ethylene-vinyl esters and ethylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers and are formulated with a hydrated inorganic filler, an alkoxy silane, a crosslinking agent and the three-component stabilizer package. Antioxidants utilized for the three-component stabilizer package include tetrakis[methylene(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate)]methane, pentaerythritol tetrakis(betalaurylthiopropionate) and thiodiethylene bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate).Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1994Date of Patent: May 2, 1995Assignee: Quantum Chemical CorporationInventors: Steven W. Horwatt, James W. Biggs

Patent number: 5256489Abstract: The present invention relates to improved polymeric compositions based on ethylene-vinyl ester and ethylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers which can be crosslinked to provide insulation coatings for wire and cable products. The copolymer compositions contain a hydrated inorganic filler, an alkoxysilane, an antioxidant and a polymeric processing additive. Organic peroxides are preferably employed to facilitate crosslinking. An improved method for providing the improved compositions and electrical conductors coated with the crosslinkable polymeric compositions are also provided by the invention.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1993Date of Patent: October 26, 1993Assignee: Quantum Chemical CorporationInventors: Melvin F. Maringer, James W. Biggs

Patent number: 5256488Abstract: The present invention relates to improved flame retardant insulation/jacketing compositions for wire and cable products based on ethylene-vinyl ester and ethylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers. The copolymers are formulated with a hydrated inorganic filler, an alkoxysilane, a crosslinking agent, a processing additive and a combination of specific antioxidants, namely, a pentaerythritol betaalkylthiopropionate and a hindered phenol. The formulations stabilized with the pentaerythritol betaalkylthiopropionate/hindered phenol combination have good heat stability and do not tarnish or discolor the surface of the copper conductor upon steam vulcanization.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1993Date of Patent: October 26, 1993Assignee: Quantum Chemical CorporationInventor: James W. Biggs
