Patent number: 5880011Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming edge terminations in multi-layer electrical component chips, such as capacitor chips, is arranged to cut holes through a laminated printed circuit pad at locations corresponding to the boundaries between adjacent chips when the pad is subsequently cut into individual chips. The holes are then filled with conductive ink to form plugs spanning the boundaries. The pad is then cut along a grid of perpendicular cutting lines defining the individual chip areas, simultaneously cutting through each of the ink plugs so that the cut ink plugs form the appropriate edge terminations along each side edge of a chip. The cutting device is suitably programmed to cut holes over the areas corresponding to the desired edge termination sizes and positions.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1996Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: Pacific Trinetics CorporationInventors: Gordon O. Zablotny, James W. Horner, John M. Lower, Jr.

Patent number: 5772838Abstract: Apparatus and a method for production of laminated electronic or electrical devices are described which enables one thin patterned or unpatterned substrate to be easily and accurately incorporated into a previous stack of substrates by registration of a coated tape from which the substrate is excised. In the present invention the tape is indexed to a fixed position and then a platen with the previously stacked substrates is brought into registration with the stationary tape, following which the substrate is excised from the coated tape and added to the stack of substrates. Since the tape always is positioned in the equipment as indexed at the same location with each indexing step, and since once indexed the tape does not move, the platen can be brought into accurate alignment and registration with the tape.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1995Date of Patent: June 30, 1998Assignee: Pacific Trinetics CorporationInventors: Gordon O. Patent number: 5242641Abstract: In an apparatus for forming filled via holes in ceramic substrates or wafers, upper and lower masks or dies each having at least one hole are clamped between opposing injection and base members with a wafer placed between the masks. The injection member has an injection chamber containing conductive ink material which is connected with the or each hole in the upper mask. An injection device such as a piston is used to force ink out of the chamber through the or each hole in the adjacent mask, punching one or more plugs of wafer material out of the wafer and replacing each punched-out plug with ink material, the plugs being pushed into the or each aligned hole in the other mask, which acts as a stripper. In one version, each die has a single hole and filled holes are formed sequentially at successive points on the wafer. In an alternative, each die or mask has a plurality of holes and the filled holes are formed simultaneously.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1991Date of Patent: September 7, 1993Assignee: Pacific Trinetics CorporationInventors: James W. Patent number: 5087396Abstract: Via holes in a thin planar layer of unfired ceramic which consists essentially of a mixture of an inorganic nonmetallic powder having a high melting temperature and a binder having a lower vaporizing temperature, are formed by the steps of: directing a laser beam, in a sequence, at certain locations on the layer where the via holes are to be formed; controlling the power density in the directed laser beam to a low level at which the binder vaporizes at each of the locations while the powder stays unsintered and unmelted; and removing from the directed laser beam during the above steps, both the vaporized binder and the unbound powder which remains where the binder vaporizes. Preferably, the vaporizing temperature of the binder and the melting temperature of the binder and the melting temperature of the powder are selected such that they differ by at least 200.degree. C.; the power density of the laser is controlled to be between 5 kW/cm.sup.2 and 75 kW/cm.sup.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1991Date of Patent: February 11, 1992Assignee: Unisys CorporationInventors: Gordon O. Patent number: 5057171Abstract: A pressure chamber apparatus comprises a pressure chamber having an opening at one end and a plug member with a self locking sealing design telescopically mounted in the chamber for sliding movement between a retracted position in which it is inside the chamber and an extended position in which it projects at least partially out of the chamber opening. The plug member has a transverse through slot for containing one or more workpieces to be pressurized, and substantially fills the pressure chamber in the retracted position. The slot in the plug member and the pressure chamber surrounding the plug member are filled with liquid, and connected to a pressure booster for pressurizing the liquid to a selected level.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1990Date of Patent: October 15, 1991Assignee: Pacific Trinetics CorporationInventors: James W. Horner, Gordon O. Zablotny

Patent number: 4742602Abstract: A tarpaulin securing assembly includes a first surface contacting portion, a second surface contacting portion, a securing portion and a connecting portion. The first and second surface contacting portions include enlarged planar sections with axially aligned central openings disposed in substantially continuous contact with opposite major surfaces of the tarpaulin. The securing portion includes first and second rotatable fastening members operatively connected to the respective planar section extending outwardly from an exposed major surface and being axially aligned with the central openings thereof. A threaded finger member extends from the first fastening member through the planar section central openings. The second fastening member includes a threaded central passage therethrough axially aligned with the openings engageable with the threaded finger member. At least one of the fastening members includes a transverse passage therethrough substantially perpendicular to the axis of the central openings.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1987Date of Patent: May 10, 1988Inventor: James W. Patent number: 3969229Abstract: A component handler including a supporting structure and a holder on the supporting structure for holding a plurality of components to be tested. After a group of the components in the holder are tested, they are automatically released from the holder and allowed to fall under the influence of gravity along associated component paths. A memory which is located along these component paths is programmed in accordance with the test results. As the components fall along the component paths, the memory automatically directs the components into collection zones whereby the components are sorted in accordance with the test results.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1975Date of Patent: July 13, 1976Assignee: GTI CorporationInventor: James W.
