  • Patent number: 7142749
Abstract: A system and method for wavelength division multiplexing and demultiplexing with broadened and flattened passband profiles are disclosed. A spectral modifying element may be used to broaden and flatten the passband profile of associated multiple wavelength optical signals and spectral components. The system preferably includes a light focusing device and a diffraction grating having a direction of dispersion. The spectral modify element primarily transforms or broadens and flattens optical signals in only the direction of dispersion of the associated diffraction grating.

  • Publication number: 20040202416
Abstract: A wavelength-division multiplexer (WDM) or demultiplexer (WDDM) is disclosed. In this invention, the input fibers of a WDM or the output fibers of a WDDM all have end portions with expanded cores. The use of such fibers causes an increase in the spectral bandwidth of the instrument, compared to an instrument that uses standard single-mode fibers for these purposes. The use of expanded-core fibers allows larger alignment tolerances and reduces signal losses due to misalignment, diffraction and aberrations. An estimate is given of the ratio of the spectral bandwidth to the spectral spacing of adjacent channels.

  • Patent number: 6545826
Abstract: Thermally compensated wavelength division demultiplexers and multiplexers are disclosed. In one aspect, thermally compensated optical systems for use in an optical network are disclosed. The systems include a diffraction grating coupled to a grating mount having a temperature coefficient. The systems further include an optical fiber coupled to a fiber mount having a temperature coefficient and a lens assembly coupled to a lens mount. The lens mount is operable to position the lens assembly between the fiber mount and the grating mount and includes a substantially similar temperature coefficient to the fiber mount.

  • Patent number: 6282337
Abstract: A system and method for wavelength division multiplexing and demultiplexing are disclosed. The disclosed system may include a fiber optic element operable to transmit a multiplexed light signal. The system may also include a light focusing device, and the fiber optic element may be oriented to project light through the light focusing device. An additional element may be a diffraction grating having a diffraction order greater than one. The diffraction grating may be positioned in a Littrow configuration with respect to the light focusing device and may have a groove spacing equal to or larger than three times the wavelength of light used in the system.
