  • Patent number: 6657206
Abstract: An ultraviolet radiation generating system and methods is disclosed for treating a coating on a substrate, such as a coating on a fiber optic cable. The system comprises a microwave chamber having one or more ports capable of permitting the substrate to travel within or through a processing space of the microwave chamber. A microwave generator is coupled to the microwave chamber for exciting a longitudinally-extending plasma lamp mounted within the processing space of the microwave chamber. The plasma lamp emits ultraviolet radiation for irradiating the substrate in the processing space. A pair of reflectors are mounted within the processing space of the microwave chamber. The reflectors are capable of reflecting a significant portion of the ultraviolet radiation to irradiate the backside of the substrate in a surrounding and uniform fashion. When the system is operating, the microwave chamber is substantially closed to emission of microwave energy and ultraviolet radiation.

  • Patent number: 6368409
Abstract: An electrostatic dispensing system for dispensing flowable liquid material onto a moving substrate. The electrostatic dispensing system includes multiple liquid dispensers that are aligned along a common axis and supported in spaced, non-contacting relationship on one side of the moving substrate. Each of the liquid dispensers includes a valve to control the flow of fluid through the dispenser. An electrostatic field generator is supported in spaced, non-contacting relationship on the opposite side of the moving substrate to generate an electrostatic field through the moving substrate. The electrostatic field operates to attract flowable liquid material from dispensing outlets associated with the multiple liquid dispensers as a series of spaced, continuous streams or beads which intersect a surface of the moving substrate facing the liquid dispensers.

  • Patent number: 5739429
Abstract: A system for monitoring the flow rate of particulate material entrained within an air stream includes a feed hopper providng a source of the particulate material, and a hose for conveying the particulate material within the air stream. A pump draws the particulate material from the feed hopper and transports the particulate material with the air stream through the hose. A flow meter is associated with the hose and measures the mass flow rate of the particulate material through the hose to provide a first flow indication. A device is associated with the feed hopper and measures the change in weight of the feed hopper over a predetermined interval to provide a second flow indication. A controller corrects the first flow indication from the flow meter according to the second flow indication from the gravimetric device.

  • Patent number: 5733379
Abstract: A method for purging cured and partially cured material from a mixer employed in a system for dispensing two-component reactive polymeric materials, includes, in one aspect, the introduction of a pulsed flow of a flushing material into the mixer to purge partially cured two-component mixture from the mix and thus delay the onset of plugging of the mixer, and, in a second aspect, includes heating the mixer to a temperature between the application temperature and decomposition temperature of the cured components and then introducing flushing material at high hydraulic pressure to discharge cured material from the mixer.

  • Patent number: 5733597
Abstract: Coating dispenser apparatus and methods which utilize a snuff back device for removing a small amount of coating material from the discharge passage of the dispenser upon shut-off thereof at the end of a coating run. A control is provided which discharges the material removed from the discharge passage back into the discharge passage upon a predetermined delay after the start of the next coating run. The disclosed methods contemplate the discharge of coating material back into the discharge passage in the middle of the next coating pattern, or depending on the application, during any segment of the next coating pattern after a defined leading edge of the pattern is created, during which segment the coating material discharged back into the discharge pattern smoothly blends into the coating pattern as it is applied to a substrate. The apparatus and methods are especially useful for applying conformal coating patterns onto circuit boards.

  • Patent number: 5332125
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mixing and dispensing two different polymeric materials which react chemically with one another when combined by supplying each material to a common dispenser where the materials are mixed and dispensed, which method and apparatus is operative to maintain substantially steady state flow pressures of the materials at the inlets to the dispenser when flow is terminated such that upon restarting of the flow, the steady state volumetric ratio of materials is immediately reestablished and maintained. The method and apparatus includes two metering pumps for individually supplying the liquid materials to the dispenser and means for varying the speeds of the pumps in response to changes in temperature of the materials so as to maintain a fixed mass ratio of the materials to the dispenser.

  • Patent number: 4779762
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the gas content of dispensed hot melt thermoplastic adhesive foam. Air or another relatively inert gas is mixed with molten thermoplastic adhesive, and the mixture is pressurized to form a gas and molten adhesive "solution". When the molten adhesive and gas "solution" is dispensed at atmospheric pressure, the gas is released from "solution" and becomes entrapped in the adhesive in order to form a homogeneous closed cellular adhesive foam. In order to control the gas content of the dispensed adhesive and gas "solution", in accordance with one preferred embodiment, the pressure drop across a restriction in the flow path of the solution is sensed, and a control circuit controls the addition of gas to the adhesive to maintain the sensed pressure drop at a desired level.
