  • Patent number: 4379464
Abstract: Reducing sugars are reacted with ammonium hydroxide or ammonium salts in the presence of a trace amount of certain amino acids to produce reaction flavors for use in smoking compositions and particularly those having a high content of tobacco stems.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 18, 1981
Date of Patent: April 12, 1983
    Assignee: Philip Morris Incorporated
Inventors: D. Louise Wu, James W. Swain
  • Patent number: 4306577
Abstract: Reaction flavors for smoking compositions are disclosed. The flavors are prepared by reacting reducing sugars and selected amino acids in the presence of ammonium hydroxide and optionally in the presence of an aldehyde in an essentially solvent-free system. The thus prepared flavors may be incorporated in tobacco, reconstituted tobacco, non-tobacco substitutes or mixtures thereof.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 12, 1979
Date of Patent: December 22, 1981
    Assignee: Philip Morris Incorporated
Inventors: D. Louise S. Wu, James W. Swain
  • Patent number: 4286606
Abstract: Reaction products useful for enhancing the organoleptic response of smoking materials are disclosed. The reaction of a reducing sugar, ammonia and carboxylic acid, whether saturated or unsaturated, and having from about 6 to 26 carbon atoms, results in flavorant products, which may be incorporated into smoking filler materials without additional processing, such as refining or isolating individual components of the mixture.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 18, 1979
Date of Patent: September 1, 1981
    Assignee: Philip Morris Incorporated
Inventors: James W. Swain, Frank H. Crayton
