Patent number: 10226149Abstract: A cartridge for forming a beverage includes a container defining an interior space, a filter, a beverage medium contained in the interior space, and a filter guard. The filter may be arranged so that liquid that interacts with the beverage medium flows through the filter to exit the interior space. The container may include a surface arranged to be pierced by a piercing member to permit beverage to exit the container. The filter guard may be arranged to contact the piercing member to resist damage to the filter when the container surface is pierced. In one embodiment, the filter guard and filter may be in contact with the container surface that is pierced, yet damage to the filter that might be caused by the piercing element may be avoided.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 2017Date of Patent: March 12, 2019Assignee: Keurig Green Mountain, Inc.Inventors: Roderick H. Beaulieu, James W. Wuertele

Patent number: 6182554Abstract: A cup shaped holder is internally provided with an ejection mechanism which serves to automatically dislodge a spent beverage cartridge from an upwardly extending piercing member when the lid is opened at the end of a brewing cycle. In addition, the holder is mounted on externally protruding trunnions for pivotal movement between an upright brewing position and a partially inverted position to eject the dislodged cartridge from the holder into an underlying receptacle. The lid has a dependency arm that coacts with a pawl on the holder trunnions to automatically manipulate the holder to eject the cartridge.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1999Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Keurig, Inc.Inventors: Roderick H. Beaulieu, James W. Wuertele, Richard P. Sweeney, John E. Sylvan, Michael G. Woram, Kenneth A. Focht, Jennie Kwo

Patent number: 6142063Abstract: An automated beverage brewing system includes a liquid storage tank and a metering chamber. The metering chamber is at least partially submerged beneath a standing level of liquid in the storage tank. The chamber includes a sealable liquid inlet port communicating with the interior of the storage tank beneath the standing level of liquid. The chamber also includes a liquid outlet port and an aperture that receives compressed air, wherein the compressed air forces a predetermined amount of liquid from the liquid output port of the chamber for use in preparing a brewed beverage. A pump provides the compressed air and a controller monitors a pressure signal value indicative of the air pressure in the metering chamber. The controller commands the pump on to commence flow of the predetermined amount of liquid from the metering chamber.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1999Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: Keurig, Inc.Inventors: Roderick H. Patent number: 4280124Abstract: A corrosion detector for use in detecting corrosion currents in the form of AC and DC leakage currents which occur in a marina. The detector monitors AC power and ground lines or other conductive lines interconnected between boats in a marina and includes a transducer to detect leakage currents which occur in the boats connected to the power lines. The detector provides either an alarm signal or displays the damage rate and location to indicate corrosion currents in one or more of the boats in a harbor.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1978Date of Patent: July 21, 1981Inventor: James W. Patent number: 4179745Abstract: A thermocouple linearizer circuit for use in a device for digitally displaying the temperature of a thermocouple. The circuit includes a plurality of proportional correction means, each connected to receive a non-linear electrical signal representing the temperature of a thermocouple. The correction circuits generate a correction signal proportional to the difference between a non-linear electrical signal and a predetermined reference signal. The correction signals are initiated when the non-linear signal exceeds the respective reference signal in each correction circuit. An arithmetic unit is included for adding the correction signals and the non-linear signal thereby forming a signal corresponding to a linear function of the temperature of the thermocouple.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1978Date of Patent: December 18, 1979Assignee: Gentran, Inc.Inventor: James W.
