    Abstract: A gas generator capable of quickly producing a large quantity of substantially solids-free nontoxic gas useful as a propellant in halon replacement fire suppression systems is provided. The double base castable propellant composition is formulated from a major amount of ammonium nitrate, a minor amount of nitrocellulose, at least one selected high energy nitrate ester plasticizer, a thermal scavenger, and at least one burning rate modification and control additive to achieve a burning rate of 0.2 inches per second or greater at 1000 psia. The burning rate is further enhanced by the configuration of the solid propellant, which is formed to have dimensions selected to enhance the burning rate. The gas generator composition and physical arrangement synergistically produce an optimally rapid burning rate.

The compositions employed in the present invention have low pressure exponents, high burning rates and low flame temperatures.

    Abstract: Castable propellant formulations are provided including reduced toxicity ballistic modifiers that do not adversely increase the sensitivity of the propellant to shock detonation. Failure to adequately control the propellant burn rate often results in unacceptable performance of the propellant. Carbon can act as an effective ballistic, but not to the extent of metal compounds. It has been found that pasting a ballistic modifier, including ballistic modifiers containing lead, in an inert polymer modifies the burn rate of propellants while allowing the use of a reduced amount of modifier to achieve the same desired burn rate modification as the prior art, and therefore creating reduced shortcomings associated with the ballistic modifiers.

The explosive composition also includes a solid high explosive ingredient, such as an explosive nitramine. Reactive metals, such as aluminum, magnesium or titanium, and oxidizers, such as ammonium perchlorate, ammonium nitrate, or ammonium dinitramide, are optionally included in the explosive compositions of the present invention. The disclosed explosive compositions have a typical detonation velocities above about 8000 m/s.

In order to produce a usable propellant formulation, it is necessary to control the burn rate of the propellant. Failure to adequately control the propellant burn rate often results in unacceptable performance of the propellant. It has been found that carbon fibers are capable of modifying the burn rate of propellants without resorting to lead as a burn rate additive. Accordingly, the use of from about 0.5% to about 6.0% carbon fibers is taught as effective burn rate modifiers in propellants, in order provide non-toxic means for modifying the propellant burn rate.

    Abstract: Propellant formulations are provided which include non-toxic burn rate modifiers. In order to produce a usable propellant formulation, it is necessary to control the burn rate of the propellant. Failure to adequately control the propellant burn rate often results in unacceptable performance of the propellant. For example, during the operation of a rocket motor, or similar device which contains a propellant, the propellant may produce operating pressures which are too high or too low for the intended purpose of the device.It has often been the practice to add lead to rocket motor propellants in order to modify the burn rate and to maintain the burn rate within acceptable parameters. Lead, however, is known to be toxic and a pollutant. Accordingly, it is desirable to replace the lead in the formulation. It has been found herein that bismuth trioxide is capable of modifying the burn rate of propellants without resorting to lead as a burn rate additive.
