  • Patent number: 7517584
Abstract: Scratch-resistant thermoplastic films are disclosed. The films include a scratch-resistant coating that is formed from an acrylated binder, a thermal initiator, and a melamine crosslinker. Of particular advantage, the coating can be formed on the film during an in-line process while the film is being formed. The melamine crosslinker not only causes the coating to crosslink but also improves the adhesion of the coating to the film layer. In one embodiment, the film layer is made from a polyester.

Inventors: Stephen J. Gust, Jan C. Westermeier
  • Patent number: 6911255
Abstract: An oxygen barrier coating including polyvinyl alcohol and starch. The coating is applied to polymer film, and shows excellent oxygen barrier properties.

  • Patent number: 6649216
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of coating polymer film that includes the steps of extruding a cast sheet; stretching the sheet in a machine direction; applying a UV-curable coating to the sheet in-line; stretching the sheet in a transverse direction in a tenter; and exposing the coated sheet to UV radiation in-line.

Date of Patent: November 18, 2003
    Assignee: Mitsubishi Polyester Film, LLC
Inventors: Steven J. Gust, Patrick M. Smith, Jan C. Westermeier
  • Patent number: 6613430
Abstract: The present invention provides a coated polymer film having release properties. The film includes a self-supporting polymer film layer, and a release coating on the film layer. The release coating, which can also be applied to alternate substrates, includes a cross-linkable acrylic and a polyolefin wax. The coating can optionally include a polysiloxane in combination with one or both of the acrylic and polyolefin wax.

  • Patent number: 6455142
Abstract: The present invention provides a coated polymer film having an essentially streak-free coated surface that resists the formation of fog. The film includes a self-supporting polymer film layer, and an anti-fog coating on the film layer. The anti-fog coating, which can also be applied to alternate substrates, consisting essentially of a copolyester binder and an anionic surfactant, wherein the surfactant contains less than about 0.5 weight percent of a fluorosurfactant. A slip agent can also be included in the anti-fog coating.
