  • Patent number: 6161843
Abstract: A vehicle suspension apparatus operating between the sprung and unsprung masses of a vehicle includes a pendular anti-roll bar connected to the vehicle and a pair of links which connect the bar to the wheels. The anti-roll bar includes a pair of selectively activated anti-roll bar restrictors mechanically communicating with the central rod of the anti-roll bar. In response to the roll above a predetermined threshold, at least one of the restrictors is actuated in order to clamp the roll bar and prevent axial twist of the central rod beyond the actuated restrictor, thereby varying the torsional length of the roll bar central rod. The change in the torsional length of the central rod correspondingly changes the stiffness of the roll bar.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 12, 1998
Date of Patent: December 19, 2000
    Assignee: Tenneco Automotive Inc.
    Inventor: Jan Carleer
  • Patent number: 5924528
Abstract: A shock absorber having variable damping characteristics for damping the movement of the body of an automobile is disclosed. The shock absorber includes a variable flow control valve which modulates the rate of fluid flow between the upper portion of the shock absorber working chamber and the shock absorber reservoir. The valve is variably controlled in accordance with the vehicle load so that the shock absorber damping characteristic is stiffened during high vehicle load and softened during low vehicle load, thereby varying the damping characteristic to improve vehicle ride and handling.

  • Patent number: 5882017

The anti-roll bar includes a pair of selectively activated anti-roll bar restrictors mechanically communicating with the central a rod of the anti-roll bar. In response to the roll above a predetermined threshold, at least one of the restrictors is actuated in order to clamp the roll bar and prevent axial twist of the central section beyond the actuated restrictor, thereby varying the torsional length of the roll bar central rod. The change in the torsional length of the central rod correspondingly changes the stiffness of the roll bar.
