    Abstract: The present invention provides a method of controlling scale in aqueous dishwashing systems which involves adding at least one high molecular weight terpolymer made from one or more monoethylenically unsaturated C3 to C6 monocarboxylic acids, one or more monomers having a sulfonic acid group, and one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers polymerizable with (I) and (II). In another embodiment, a high molecular weight copolymer made from one or more monoethylenically unsaturated C3 to C6 monocarboxylic acids and one or more monomers having a sulfonic acid group is added to the aqueous dishwashing system. Additionally, the present invention provides a machine dishwashing formulation comprising: a builder, which comprises not more than 2% by weight of one or more phosphate groups, based on the total weight of the dishwashing formulation; and the aforesaid terpolymer or copolymer.

More specifically, cleaning compositions containing lime-soap dispersant polymers derived from maleic acid, maleic anhydride, or salts thereof, copolymerized with a hydrophobic monomer containing from 4 to 20 carbon atoms are disclosed. Cleaning compositions containing a lime-soap dispersant based on maleic acid/diisobutylene polymers are particulary effective in producing stable liquid cleaning compositions with good lime-soap dispersancy properties.
