Publication number: 20080118309Abstract: A predominantly concrete mat comprises a concrete slab having two longitudinal edges and two transverse edges and having relatively thicker portions and relatively thinner portions, which include relatively thinner portions among the longitudinal and transverse edges, and a flexible grid embedded in the concrete slab. The flexible grid, which is polymeric, is molded so as to have longitudinally extending members and transversely extending members. End portions of specific ones but not all of the longitudinally extending members of the flexible grid extend into and nearly or completely through the relatively thinner portions along the transverse edges of the concrete slab. End portions of specific ones but not all of the transversely extending members of the flexible grid extend into and nearly or completely through the relatively thinner portions along the longitudinal edges of the concrete slab.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2006Publication date: May 22, 2008Inventor: Jan Erik Jansson

Patent number: 7048469Abstract: A flexible, molded, polymeric grid is embedded in a predominantly concrete mat comprising a concrete slab having relatively thicker portions defining blocks connected by relatively thinner portions, along which the concrete slab is breakable. The flexible grid has two longitudinal edges, two transverse edges, longitudinally extending members, and transversely extending members, where the longitudinally and transversely extending members connect the blocks to one another when the concrete slab is broken along the relatively thinner portions. The longitudinally and transversely extending members meet at nodes, which are spaced uniformly from one another, both longitudinally and transversely, except that, along the longitudinal and transverse edges, each node is spaced more distantly from the nodes nearest to the node. When the longitudinal and transverse members are disposed in an imaginary plane and the flexible grid is not stressed, fingers, which are unitary with the grid, extend from the imaginary plane.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2005Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Inventor: Jan Erik Jansson

Patent number: 6942421Abstract: In the manufacture of an articulated, predominantly concrete mat, which comprises concrete blocks and a flexible geogrid embedded in such blocks and in which the flexible geogrid defines flexible members connecting such blocks to one another, an intermediate article being a concrete slab is cast, in which a flexible geogrid is embedded. The slab has relatively thinner portions, along which the slab is breakable to form such blocks, and relatively thicker portions, which become such blocks when the slab is broken along the relatively thinner portions. The relatively thicker portions are arranged in parallel rows and are staggered in adjacent rows, before the slab is broken therealong, and the relatively thicker portions in alternate rows are aligned in parallel columns, before the slab is broken therealong.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2003Date of Patent: September 13, 2005Inventor: Jan Erik Jansson

Patent number: 6863472Abstract: A revetment made wholly or predominantly from concrete, useful to line a stream bed, having upper and lower surfaces, and having upstream and downstream edges, has, for each upstream edge, an upstream bevel, which intersects the upper surface and which intersects said upstream edge. The revetment has an array of holes extending between the upper and lower surfaces. Each hole has a lateral wall flaring outwardly in a downstream direction from a circular mouth at the lower wall to an elongate mouth at the upper wall. Each upstream or downstream edge is stepped so as to define an upper or lower flange. In an assembly of such revetments, which may be connected to one another, as by cables, each of at least some of the upper flanges overlies one of the lower flanges.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2002Date of Patent: March 8, 2005Inventor: Jan Erik Jansson

Patent number: 6761509Abstract: A retaining wall with stacked courses of concrete modules, each module having an upright front wall, two upright lateral walls, and a bottom wall. Each lateral wall has a front edge adjoining the front wall, a back edge spaced from the front edge, and upright ribs extending in-wardly outwardly from the lateral wall. The upright ribs are spaced equally from the front wall. Each lateral wall also has a provision for receiving a batten which, if pulled backwardly, bears against the upright ribs. A geogrid is anchored to the modules by the batten.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2002Date of Patent: July 13, 2004Inventor: Jan Erik Jansson

Patent number: 6692195Abstract: For abating noise along a highway, along a railway, or along another noise-generating way, a wall having an anterior face and a posterior face comprises, across each face, concrete modules stacked in an upper tier, at least one intermediate tier, and a lower tier. Each module is plantable and has a batten. Across each face, the modules are spaced laterally from one another in courses, one course in each tier, so that modules of each course straddle modules of the next course above or below said course. In each of alternate ones of the tiers, a geogrid strip is deployed around the battens of the modules along the anterior face and around the battens of the modules along the posterior face, in a zig-zag pattern, so as to tie the modules along the anterior face to the modules along the posterior face.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2001Date of Patent: February 17, 2004Inventor: Jan Erik Jansson

Publication number: 20040018061Abstract: In a retaining wall comprising stacked courses of concrete modules, each module has unitary walls including a front wall, two lateral walls, and a bottom wall, the front and lateral walls being upright. Each lateral wall has a front edge adjoining the front wall, a back edge spaced from the front edge, an upright rib extending inwardly from said lateral wall, and an upright rib extending outwardly from said lateral wall, the upright ribs being spaced equally from the front wall. Each lateral wall has a provision, such as a recess opening upwardly or an opening through that lateral wall, which is adapted to receive and receives a batten so that the batten can extend through said lateral wall and which is positioned where the batten if pulled backwardly can bear against the upright ribs of said lateral wall. In each of at least some of the courses, a batten is received by the provisions of the lateral walls of at least some of the concrete modules and a geogrid is anchored to the same modules, by the batten.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2002Publication date: January 29, 2004Inventor: Jan Erik Jansson
