Publication number: 20130271302Abstract: Configurable buttons for electronic devices such as portable electronic devices are provided. A configurable button may have a button member that moves relative to a device housing when it is desired to activate a switch. The button may have an associated touch sensor. The touch sensor may detect when a user's finger touches a particular portion of the button member. Contact with only this portion of the button member is generally inadvertent, so an actuator may be used to prevent or otherwise restrict motion of the button relative to a device housing. This prevents inadvertent activation of the button when a user is manipulating portions of an electronic device such as clip or lid, but does not intend to depress the button.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 4, 2013Publication date: October 17, 2013Inventors: John Benjamin Filson, Stephen Brian Lynch, Emery Sanford, Jan Moolsintong

Patent number: 8330061Abstract: Compact input devices formed on flexible substrates are disclosed. The input devices may be formed using three or more conducting layers. By including three or more conducting layers, the diameter of the input device may be minimized. In addition, to improve the flexibility of portions of the input device mounted, some portions of the input device may be made to have fewer layers than other portions of the input device.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2011Date of Patent: December 11, 2012Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Fletcher Rothkopf, Jan Moolsintong, Joseph Fisher, Wendell Sander, Erturk Kocalar

Patent number: 7880729Abstract: Selection button isolation arrangements for use with electronic devices are presented including: a selection pad forming a substantially planar surface disposed about a first axis, the selection pad having a pad top surface, the pad top surface configured to receive a user input, the selection pad configured to actuate a number of switches; a selection button substantially co-located with and disposed about the first axis for actuating a selection button switch, the selection button configured to receive a user input; and an annular isolation ring disposed about the first axis having a standoff for mechanically isolating the selection button such that the selection button switch is not actuated by the first user input. In some embodiments, the user input indicators are selected from the group consisting of: a menu selection, a play selection, a pause selection, a forward search selection, a backward search selection, and a stop selection.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2006Date of Patent: February 1, 2011Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Brian Lynch, Jan Moolsintong
