Patent number: 6299402Abstract: According to one aspect, the invention relates to a method of stacking covers for the fabrication of booklets. Each cover includes two cover sheets and an interconnecting spine. Applied to the inner surface of the spine is a binding device that includes a binding agent. The covers are mutually stacked with the inner surface of the spine of one cover lying against the outer surface of the spine of an adjacent cover. According to the invention, a deactivatable separating device is provided between the binding agent and the outer surface of the spine of an adjacent cover, so as to prevent adhesion between the spines of respective covers. According to another aspect of the invention, a cover of this kind is provided with a binding device that includes a binding agent (104) and a separating device (105) disposed on the surface of the binding agent that lies remote from the spine (103), this separating device preferably having a form of woven material affixed to the binding agent (104).Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1999Date of Patent: October 9, 2001Assignee: Bindomatic ABInventor: Jan Sabelström

Patent number: 6217271Abstract: The invention relates to a method and to a device for producing booklets, each of which comprises a cover (A) that has two cover sides, a spine between the cover sides, a glue string applied to the inner surface of the spine, and a sheet bundle inserted between the two cover sides. A plurality of covers each having an applied glue string are placed in the immediate vicinity of each other, in a readiness position. The sheet bundle (B) is then combined with one of the covers (A), so as to enclose the sheet bundle in the cover with one side edge of the bundle facing towards the glue string. The glue string is then actuated in an actuator (8), so as to bind this side edge of the bundle (B) to the inner surface of the spine. According to the invention, the sheet bundle (B) is combined with the cover (A) by moving the sheets of the bundle one by one, or as a complete bundle, to the cover in its readiness position by means of a powered transporter.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1999Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Assignee: Bindomatic ABInventors: Urpo Latvakangas, Jan Sabelström

Patent number: 5580097Abstract: A cover comprising a spine (3), a strip of binding agent (4) connected to the spine, and two cover sides 1, 2) which are connected with the spine by means of a first pair of creasing lines (5, 6) extending parallel to the strip, the cover sides also being provided with a second pair of of creasing lines (7, 8) extending parallel to the strip, which creasing lines are at at short distance from the first pair and along which the cover sides are folded on opening and closing of the booklet, a sheaf of papers (20) being intended to be inserted into the cover with one side edge of the same in contact with the strip, such that on melting and subsequent cooling of the strip, the sheaf of papers will be connected to the spine to form a finished booklet. The second pair of creasing lines are deformed in such a way that when the cover sides of the cover are essentially parallel, the two portions (9, 10) between the two pairs of creasing lines exert an inwardly directed pressure against the not yet melted strip.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1994Date of Patent: December 3, 1996Assignee: Bindomatic ABInventors: Urpo Latvakangas, Jan Sabelstrom

Patent number: 5570985Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for manufacturing booklets. Each booklet is made of a cover having two cover sheets and a spine, a bead of glue attached to the inside of the spine, and a sheaf of papers inserted between the cover sheets and attached to the spine by the bead of glue. The apparatus and method include moving the sheaf of papers to a first position by a first transporter, moving one of several covers stored in a cassette to a second position by a second transporter, and moving the sheaf of papers and cover into contact so that the sheaf of papers is enclosed by the covers and a side edge of the sheaf contacts the bead of glue. The assembled booklet moves past a device for activating the bead of glue. A method is provided for filling the cassette, which stores and dispenses the covers, and a method and apparatus are provided for jogging up the sheaf of papers.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1994Date of Patent: November 5, 1996Inventors: Urpo Latvakangas, Jan Sabelstrom

Patent number: 5062754Abstract: The invention disclosed is directed to a method, an apparatus for manufacturing and apparatus for using a booklet, folder or wrapper comprising two substantially parallel covers (1,2) united with a spine (3) at crease lines (5,6). A strip (4) of adhesive binder is attached to the inside of the spine (3) and extends only between the crease lines (5,6). The strip of adhesive (4) is intended to be activated to provide adhesion between itself and one edge of a sheaf of sheets of material which are inserted between the covers (2,3). Two opposing longitudinal side edges of the (4a, 4b) of the strip of adhesive (4) are united with the respective covers (1,2) before the sheaf of sheets is inserted between the covers (2,3).Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1988Date of Patent: November 5, 1991Assignee: Bindomatic ABInventors: Goran Bolin, Urpo Latvakangas, Jan Sabelstrom

Patent number: 4855010Abstract: Apparatus for gluing together at least two individual sheets of material cut to finished dimensions and intended to form parts of a folder consisting of a spine and two covers. The apparatus includes two reception surfaces situated side by side, each defined by aligning members for aligning the two individual sheets in predetermined positions relative to each other. There is provided a first conveyor for moving one sheet away from its reception surface to a gluing device for coating at least one sheet with a glue bead and a second conveyor for moving the second sheet away from its reception surface. At least one of the conveyors is adapted to move one sheet relative to the other so that both sheets overlap each other in the area of the glue bead. A press is provided for pressing together both sheets in said area.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1987Date of Patent: August 8, 1989Assignee: DynasonicInventors: Goran Bolin, Jan Sabelstrom
