    Abstract: Two electrodes parallel to each other are formed on one of two substrates, homeotropic alignment films are formed on the substrates and a liquid crystal material having positive dielectric anisotropy is injected between the substrates. When a voltage is applied to the two electrodes, a parabolic electric field between the electrodes drives the liquid crystal molecules. Since the generated electric field is symmetrical with respect to the boundary-plane equal distance from each of the two electrodes, the liquid crystal molecules are symmetrically aligned with respect to the boundary-plane, and the optical characteristic is compensated in both regions divided by the boundary-plane, thereby obtaining a wide viewing angle. The electric field does not exert influences on the liquid crystal molecules on the boundary-plane since the electric field on the boundary-plane is parallel to the substrates and perpendicular to the two electrodes; and thus, it is perpendicular to the liquid crystal molecules.

Each of the thin film transistors includes a gate electrode connected to one of the gate lines, a source electrode connected to one of the data lines, and a drain electrode. The TFT array panel also includes a plurality of pixel electrodes, each of the pixel electrodes connected to one of the drain electrodes and having a pair of oblique edges parallel to each other, and covering at least a portion of the drain electrodes.

    Abstract: A display device including a first substrate, a first subpixel electrode, a second subpixel electrode corresponding to the first substrate, a second substrate and a common electrode formed on the second substrate is provided. The first subpixel electrode and the second subpixel electrode are formed on the first substrate. The second subpixel electrode is spaced apart from the first subpixel electrode. The common electrode has a first cutout and a second cutout. The first cutout is disposed over the first subpixel electrode and the second cutout is disposed over the second subpixel electrode. At least a portion of the first cutout has a first width and at least a portion of the second cutout has a second width different from the first width. The first width is larger than the second width in one embodiment. This structure enhances the aperture ratio and the brightness of the display device. Failures such as a residual image, stain or fingerprint may be reduced and the picture quality is improved.

The directors in adjacent domains make a right angle. The tetragonal ring shape aperture is broken at midpoint of each side of the tetragon, and the width of the aperture decreases as goes from the bent point to the edge. Wide viewing angle is obtained by four domains where the directors of the liquid crystal layer indicate different directions, disclination is removed and luminance increases.

The electrodes enclose an open space (gap) such that their outer boundary has a substantially rectangular shape. The flat panel display may also include a capacitance electrode coupled to the second pixel electrode to form a coupling capacitor. In use, the coupling capacitor operates such that a magnitude of a voltage applied to the first pixel electrode is lower than an applied data voltage, and a magnitude of a voltage applied to the second pixel electrode is higher than an applied voltage. The different voltages operate such that a tilt direction of LC molecules disposed above the first pixel electrode differs from a tilt direction of LC molecules disposed above the second pixel electrode.
