  • Publication number: 20140104395
Abstract: Methods of and systems for three-dimensional digital impression and visualization of objects through an elastomer are disclosed. A method of estimating optical correction parameters for an imaging system include pressing an object of known surface topography against an elastomer and imaging a plurality of views of the surface topography of the object through the elastomer. The method also includes estimating a three-dimensional model of the object based on the plurality of views and estimating optical correction parameters based on a known surface topography of the object and the estimated three-dimensional model. The optical correction parameters correct distortions in the estimated three-dimensional model to better match the known surface topography.

  • Patent number: 8503763
Abstract: A family of one-dimensional image signatures is obtained to represent each one of a sequence of images in a number of translational and rotational orientations. By calculating these image signatures as images are captured, a new current view can be quickly compared to historical views in a manner that is less dependent on the relative orientation of a target and search image. These and other techniques may be employed in a three-dimensional reconstruction process to generate a list of candidate images from among which full three-dimensional registration may be performed to test for an adequate three-dimensional match. In another aspect this approach may be supplemented with a Fourier-based approach that is selectively applied to a subset of the historical images.

  • Patent number: 7961954
Abstract: Improved correlation techniques employ data from forward (template-to-reference) and reverse (reference-to-template) correlation to identify valid correlation peaks, enforce symmetry in correlation peaks, and/or combine forward and reverse correlation data. In embodiments, these techniques eliminate or reduce rms noise in a recovered signal peak location by enforcing correlation peak symmetry. The forward and reverse correlation methods described herein may be used for validation of correlation peaks, detection of outlier data points and improved interpolation, such as for higher accuracy localization of a peak center with sub-pixel resolution.

  • Patent number: 7956862
Abstract: Camera motion is determined in a three-dimensional image capture system using a combination of two-dimensional image data and three-dimensional point cloud data available from a stereoscopic, multi-aperture, or similar camera system. More specifically, a rigid transformation of point cloud data between two three-dimensional point clouds may be more efficiently parameterized using point correspondence established between two-dimensional pixels in source images for the three-dimensional point clouds.

  • Publication number: 20110050848
Abstract: Tools are described for preparing digital dental models for use in dental restoration production processes, along with associated systems and methods. Dental modeling is improved by supplementing views of three-dimensional models with still images of the modeled subject matter. Video data acquired during a scan of the model provides a source of still images that can be displayed alongside a rendered three-dimensional model, and the two views (model and still image) may be synchronized to provide a common perspective of the model's subject matter. This approach provides useful visual information for disambiguating surface features of the model during processing steps such as marking a margin of a prepared tooth surface for a restoration. Interactive modeling tools may be similarly enhanced.

  • Publication number: 20110043613
Abstract: A three-dimensional measurement is refined by warping two-dimensional images of an object from offset camera positions according to a three-dimensional model of the object, and applying any resulting discrepancies to refine the three-dimensional model, or to refine one of a number of three-dimensional measurements used to create the three-dimensional model.

  • Publication number: 20110007137
Abstract: A hierarchical pattern matching process is improved for use in three-dimensional reconstruction by calculating a disparity field for low-resolution data, and using this low-resolution disparity field to estimate the disparity field for higher-resolution images. By pre-warping a template according to the estimated disparity field, improved correlation results can be obtained.
