  • Patent number: 7106704
Abstract: The present invention proposes a method for controlling transmission resources of a radio access network adapted to transmit data packets in real time traffic and in non-real traffic, the method comprising the steps of obtaining information related to transmission resources required for handling real time traffic; and reserving transmission resources for handling non-real time traffic based on a knowledge of the overall available transmission resources of a radio transceiver device of said radio access network and the information related to the transmission resources required for handling real time traffic by said radio transceiver. Transmission resources are subsequently activated based on channel elements which are identified by pre-selected channel element identifiers. This alleviates the use of hitherto required time consuming channel activation procedures as well as the need to refer to any bearer information.

  • Patent number: 7027417
Abstract: In connection-oriented switching of packet data in known mobile communications systems, resources of the transmission path between the serving node (SGSN) and the radio network subsystem (RNS) and memory resources of the radio network subsystem are reserved unnecessarily due to the burst-like nature of packet data. Thus the transmission network's limited address space and the radio network subsystem's management resources are consumed. The invention concerns such connection management in a mobile communications system, which is suitable for packet-switched data transmission. The method according to the invention is characterized in that the logical connection between the serving node (SGSN) and the radio network subsystem (RNS) is released, so that the logical connection between the serving node (SGSN) and the mobile station (MS) remains, and the released logical connection is reconnected, when relaying of user data starts.

  • Patent number: 6931253
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method for management of bearers in cellular telecommunication systems in such a situation, when the demand of services is greater than the capacity of the network to provide such services. According to the invention, a set of priority values is associated with each bearer. Preferably, the set of priority values comprises an absolute priority value, which is the same for all bearers associated with a certain USIM, and a relative priority value, which defines the priority order of the bearers associated with a certain USIM. The network uses these priority values to determine, which bearer is dropped, when not enough resources are available.

  • Patent number: 6757524
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for applying diversity reception when signals of a mobile station (MS) are received via at least two separate base stations (BTS1, BTS2). A first base station controller (BSC1) is arranged to forward the signals received from a base station (BTS1) to a second base station controller (BSC2), which is arranged to apply diversity combining to forward the received signals further to a mobile switching center (MSC1, MSC2). In connection with handover, the second base station controller (BSC2) is arranged to forward the signals received from a base station (BTS2) to the first base station controller (BSC1); a connection is set up from the first base station controller (BSC1) to the mobile switching center (MSC1, MSC2); and the first base station controller (BSC1) is arranged to apply diversity combining to forward the received signals further to the mobile switching center (MSC1, MSC2).

  • Patent number: 6721566
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and arrangement for performing a cell update procedure in a cellular communications system. The cellular communication system comprises a plurality of cells, and a first and a second network controllers. A station is initially on a first cell controlled by the first controller and then in a second cell controlled by the second controller. When changing from one cell to another the station sends cell update information and other information to the second controller which then stores the received other information and send to the first controller a message indicating that information has been received at the second controller from the station. A network element for use in the above method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6584314
Abstract: The basic idea of the invention is to separate the location area used in the RAN and the reporting area used when reporting the location of the mobile to the core network. The size of the location area is selected preferably in the RAN based on the services used by the subscriber to optimize the use of radio resources. A reporting area comprises one or a plurality of location areas. The size of a reporting area is selected based on the accuracy of location information needed in the core network. The RAN informs the core network when a subscriber moves out of his current location area. The core network and the radio access network negotiate the size of the reporting area prior to the activation of the service. Additionally, the reporting areas can be renegotiated when the service is in the active state.

  • Patent number: 6483830
Abstract: The invention relates to a data transmission method and a base station system. The method comprises transmitting radio interface information over a bidirectional data link between a base station and a base station controller. The radio interface information comprises signalling information, user information and error control information. The method is characterized in that the radio interface information is compressed to fit into at least one ATM cell by replacing the original error control information of the radio interface information with simple status information. Other information may also be compressed and inserted into the ATM cell. Realization of the method is exemplified in the DECT system. The invention also relates to the necessary means and their protocol stacks.
