  • Patent number: 7545774
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling the function of a mobile station in a packet switched communication network based on a cellular network, which communication network is arranged to transfer information between a base station and at least one wireless communication device by means of a radio channel, wherein to transfer information, a transmission power on a set level is used on the radio channel. Information divided into successive blocks (10, B0-B11) is transmitted from the base station to the mobile station on the radio channel. In the method, the block also contains information (PR) relating to the power level of the transmission. In the method, a block (10, B0-B11) that is transmitted repeatedly and at fixed intervals is transmitted with a fixed transmission power to establish a reference level.

  • Patent number: 7308054
Abstract: A device and a method for determining a reference level for automatic gain control of a radio frequency signal to be received, particularly having a varying strength, in which method frames of a logical general packet control channel are received, as well as frames which have been transmitted with a predetermined transmission power level and by using a predetermined way of controlling the transmission power level. In the invention, said reference level is determined on the basis of at least one frame of a received radio block, or on the basis of at least one preceding frame, or on the basis of both of these, wherein the reference level is corrected on the basis of the signal strength measured during their reception.

  • Patent number: 7257177
Abstract: A device and a method for determining a reference level for automatic gain control of a radio frequency signal to be received, particularly having a varying strength, in which method radio blocks are received on a logical general packet data traffic channel of a signal, which radio blocks have been transmitted with a predetermined transmission power level and by using a predetermined way of controlling the transmission power level. • Patent number: 6834184
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for supplying reference data that is to be used in a mobile station of a radio communications network for a frequency update of the frequency used by the mobile station, which reference data is based on bursts received by the mobile station from a base station of said radio communications system. In order to allow for an improved supply of reference data to an automatic frequency correction algorithm, it is proposed that the method comprises determining the signal-to-noise-ratio of all bursts received unless they were discarded by some selection process; and providing at least some of the bursts for which a signal-to-noise-ratio greater than a predetermined value was determined as basis for the reference data to be used for the frequency update. The invention equally relates to a mobile station, a module and a radio communications system comprising the corresponding means.

  • Patent number: 6658235
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and system for transmitting control information in a communication system (1) comprising at least one base station subsystem (BSS) and a wireless terminal (2). In the method and system, a set of alternative values are defined for said control information, and information is transmitted in bursts in packet form between the base station subsystem (BSS) and the wireless terminal (2). At least one burst formed of a packet is supplemented with at least one item of control data, wherein at the receiving state, the control data received in the burst is examined. Also, at least one property of the received signal is examined to find out the reliability of the received control data.

  • Publication number: 20030060244
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for reducing power consumption of a mobile station operated in a packet radio network, in which information is transmitted through a base station to a mobile station in data frame format on a logical packet data traffic channel, wherein the base station can for reducing the loading of the radio channel use on a logical packet traffic channel discontinuous transmission mode for downlink communication. In the solution according to the invention the properties of one or multiple bursts positioned in the initial part of each block period are observed, and upon detecting that said burst/bursts contain noise instead of a downlink transmission, the mobile station is set to power-saving mode for the rest of the block period. The invention further relates to a mobile station implementing the method.

  • Patent number: 6377803
Abstract: The invention concerns a mobile station and a method of controlling cell idle-mode re-selection measurements in a mobile station in a mobile communication system comprising base stations where a base station defines a cell, and a mobile station for communicating with at least one base station, in which method when the mobile station is in idle mode, the mobile station monitors paging messages coming from the base station informing the mobile station of possible transmissions to come, the paging messages arrive at certain intervals, the interval defining a discontinous reception period (DRX period), and further in idle mode the mobile station (MS) performs cell re-selection measurements on certain channels. The number of cell re-selection measurements (Proposal) is proportional to the length of the DRX period, whereby during a longer DRX period a higher number of cell re-selection measurements is performed than during a shorter DRX period.
