Patent number: 7929494Abstract: The invention relates to a data transmission in a digital mobile communication system. In a mobile communication system employing a so-called multi-channel access technique, one or more traffic channels may be allocated to a mobile station (MS) for data transfer, in accordance with the data transfer rate required by the application using the mobile station. In the invention, a data call is determined minimum and maximum requirements for the data transfer rate of the user data. The mobile communication network (BSS, MSC) dynamically adjusts (Handover CMD/Additional Assignment) the channel configuration assigned to the mobile station (MS) for the data call and consisting of one or more traffic channels, within the limits of said minimum and maximum requirements of the data channel, depending on the changing allocation state of the resources of the mobile communication network.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2000Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: QUALCOMM, IncorporatedInventors: Jari Hamalainen, Jari Vainikka, Zhi-Chun Honkasalo, Harri Jokinen, Harri Posti, Harri Honkasalo, David Lin

Patent number: 7228143Abstract: A method of paging a mobile station to establish a packet-switched connection in a mobile telephone network that supports a circuit-switched connection and a packet-switched connection. To establish a mobile-terminated circuit-switched connection, the mobile telephone network sends the mobile station a page request, as a result of which the mobile station switches to standby mode for a circuit-switched connection. To save the batteries and to reduce the need of processing, the mobile station listens only to the paging channels of the circuit-switched connection. To establish a mobile-terminated packet-switched connection, the mobile telephone network sends the mobile station a page request via a circuit-switched connection and subsequently sends the mobile station the additional information commanding the mobile station to switch to a packet-switched connection. After detecting the additional information, the mobile station switches to the packet-switched connection.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2000Date of Patent: June 5, 2007Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Jari Hämäläinen, Jari Vainikka, Hannu Kari

Patent number: 6570860Abstract: A method and apparatus for data transmission in a time division multiple access (TDMA) mobile communication system, in which one or more time-slots may be allocated to a mobile stations for data transmission. The mobile station indicates, upon setting up a data call, to the mobile communication network a desired level of service for the user data transfer and the mobile communication network assigns the mobile station for a data call a channel configuration consisting of one or more time- slots in connection with call set-up or handover. The assigned channel configuration depends on the resources currently available in the mobile communication network and enables a data channel performance which is within the limits of the desired level of service.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1997Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventors: Jari Hämäläinen, Jari Vainikka, Zhi-Chun Honkasalo, Harri Jokinen, Harri Posti

Publication number: 20020057667Abstract: The invention relates to a data transmission method in TDMA mobile communication system. In a mobile communication system employing a so-called multi-slot access technique, one or more time-slots may be allocated to a mobile station for data transmission at the data transfer rate required by an application using the mobile station. In the invention, upon establishing a data call, the mobile station (MS) indicates the mobile communication network (BTS, BSC, MSC) the minimum and the maximum requirements for the user data transfer rate (Set Up). The mobile communication network assigns the mobile station (MS) for a data call a channel configuration, depending on the network resources currently available in the mobile communication network and enabling a data transfer rate which is between the minimum requirement and the maximum requirement.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 1997Publication date: May 16, 2002Inventors: JARI HAMALAINEN, JARI VAINIKKA, ZHI-CHUN HONKASALO, HARRI JOKINEN, HARRI POSTI

Patent number: 6240079Abstract: In a cellular communication system, multiple TDMA time slot channels may be assigned to a single mobile station. The network may dynamically adjust, during a call, the number of channels assigned to any one mobile station based on resources available to the network and based on a level of service desired by the mobile station. In this manner, mobile stations having varying bandwidth requirements can be efficiently served by a single communication system.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1997Date of Patent: May 29, 2001Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventors: Jari Hämäläinen, Jari Vainikka, Zhi-Chun Honkasalo, Harri Jokinen, Harri Posti

Patent number: 6072787Abstract: For data transmission in a digital mobile communication system, in a mobile communication system employing a so-called multi-channel access technique, one or more traffic channels may be allocated to a mobile station for data transfer, in accordance with the data transfer rate required by the application using the mobile station. Minimum and maximum requirements are determined for the data transfer rate of the user data. The mobile communication network dynamically adjusts the channel configuration assignment to the mobile station for the data call, so as to consist of one or more traffic channels, within the limits of the minimum and maximum requirements of the data transfer rate, depending on the changing allocation state of the resources of the mobile communication network.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1996Date of Patent: June 6, 2000Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventors: Jari Hamalainen, Jari Vainikka, Zhi-Chun Honkasalo, Harri Jokinen, Harri Posti, Harri Honkasalo, David Lin

Patent number: 5930233Abstract: In a digital data transmission system using sliding-window flow control with an adjustable window size on a non-transparent data connection whose nominal data transmission rate may vary during the connection, a receiving party delays the transmission of a retransmission request for a missing frame for the duration of a delay, so that the receiving party may ensure that the missing frame has not been moved to be sent later in the same group or in next groups. If the missing frame is received later in the same group or in the next groups within said delay, no retransmission request is sent. If the missing frame is not received by the end of the delay, a retransmission request is sent. This eliminates unnecessary retransmissions due to the wrong frame order, and resulting loading or congestion. This results in a higher throughput on the data connection. If grouping is not being used, retransmission is not delayed unless a delay is needed for another reason.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventors: Mikko Kanerva, Hannu Kari, Jari Vainikka, Juha-Pekka Ahopelto

Patent number: 5920545Abstract: A digital telecommunications system and method for non-transparent data transmission includes a non-transparent data connection between a transmitting party and a receiving party, on which channel coding is employed. The transmission buffer buffers the data frames to be transmitted and stores the transmitted data frames until it receives an acknowledgement of successful reception. This is avoided by monitoring the quality of the non-transparent connection, and if the quality of the the connection drops to a specific threshold value, by changing the channel coding scheme of the connection for a more efficient one. Simultaneously, however, more channel capacity is allocated for the connection in according with the chosen channel coding scheme so that the original nominal user data rate can be maintained unchanged or nearly unchanged.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1997Date of Patent: July 6, 1999Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventors: Juha Rasanen, Jari Hamalainen, Mikko Kanerva, Hannu Kari, Jari Vainikka
