Patent number: 9581173Abstract: A compressor housing defines an inlet bore having a first inlet collar disposed therein. The inlet collar is connected to the housing with a first plurality of radially extending posts. The first plurality of posts is removed to detach the inlet collar from the housing, and the inlet collar is removed from the housing. The same or another inlet collar is concentrically located within a liner. The liner can be located at a radial distance around at least a portion of the inlet collar. The inlet collar is connected to the liner by radially inserting a second plurality of posts through the liner and into the inlet collar. An assembly of the liner containing the inlet collar is inserted into the inlet bore of the housing such that the inlet collar forms the inducer bore of the compressor housing.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2014Date of Patent: February 28, 2017Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Jarrod David Moss, Douglas L. Hampton, Trent A. Simpson

Patent number: 9353702Abstract: A method of manufacturing an engine block is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes providing an engine block including a cylinder bore and a top deck with a head face including a predetermined surface roughness. The method also includes masking the cylinder bore with a masking plug, the masking plug being located at a predetermined insertion distance measured from a masking plug outer surface to the head face. The method further includes applying a corrosion resistant coating to the top deck over the head face and machine finishing the engine block including the coating to the engine block specifications.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2014Date of Patent: May 31, 2016Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Robert E. Sharp, Adam William Ostein, Curtis John Graham, Jarrod David Moss, Bharat Kumar Meduru

Publication number: 20130337215Abstract: A used component, such as an engine block or engine head, has at least one dimension that does not match a dimensional specification for the component. A thermal spray coating of FeAlSiC is applied to build up the dimension. The excess coating is milled off so that the body and coating have a second shape that matches the dimensional specification for the component. The coating has an ordered DO3 crystal structure with a stable aluminum oxide scale that produces oxidation resistance at about 700° C.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 19, 2012Publication date: December 19, 2013Applicant: CATERPILLAR, INC.Inventors: Robert Eugene Sharp, Kegan Jon Luick, M.
