  • Patent number: 9544875
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system to manage paging channels in a wireless communication network. When the network encounters a situation where the network is to transmit an access response message in a coverage area to a mobile station, the network will determine whether the mobile station is in an access handoff state. If not, the network will transmit the message to the mobile station on a paging channel selected based on the mobile station's identifier. Otherwise, the network will transmit the message to the mobile station on both that paging channel and a default paging channel (e.g., primary channel) selected without consideration of the mobile station's identifier. This process can help avoid an access handoff failure. Further, a radio access network may opt to use the default paging channel in response to the wireless coverage area having a different number of paging channels than an adjacent coverage area.

  • Patent number: 9531504
Abstract: One or more indications of signal quality as measured by a wireless communication device (WCD) served by a radio access network (RAN) may be transmitted from the WCD to the RAN. A determination may be made that the one or more indications of signal quality meet or exceed a threshold signal quality. Possibly based on the one or more indications of signal quality meeting or exceeding the threshold signal quality, the WCD may bundle at least some hybrid automatic repeat request (HARD) acknowledgments that the WCD transmits to the RAN.

  • Patent number: 9479989
Abstract: A base station or a UE may use another base station's carrier-aggregation policy for a cell provided by the other base station as a basis to control handover of the UE from being served by the base station to being served by the other base station. As one example, a first base station may use a second base station's carrier-aggregation policy for at least one of multiple co-located cells provided by the second base station as a basis to control handover of the UE from being served by the first base station to being served by the second base station. As another example, a UE may use a second base station's carrier-aggregation policy for one of multiple co-located cells provided by the second base station as a basis to control cell reselection.

  • Patent number: 9473976
Abstract: When a UE engages in application-layer session setup signaling with a session server via a radio access network and gateway, the UE conveys in its session setup signaling an indication of the UE's observed air interface quality (e.g., received signal strength or signal to noise ratio) and perhaps an indication of a characteristic of an neighboring air interface (e.g., a duplex configuration or band of the neighboring air interface). The session server then reports the UE's indicated air interface quality and perhaps neighboring air interface characteristic to a policy server, and the policy server uses that information as a basis to select a quality of service level for a bearer to be established between the UE and the gateway for carrying media content of the session. The policy server then invokes establishment of a bearer having the selected quality of service level.

  • Patent number: 9473973
Abstract: It may be determined that a HARQ transmission schedule from a RAN to a WCD includes HARQ acknowledgment bundling. An indication of signal quality as measured by the WCD may be received by the RAN. The indicated signal quality may be associated with a first transmission rate. The RAN may determine a first set of one or more data slots of the HARQ transmission schedule for which the WCD bundles HARQ acknowledgments. In response to this determination, one or more HARQ subpackets may be transmitted to the WCD in the first set of one or more data slots. The one or more HARQ subpackets may be transmitted at a second transmission rate that is less than the first transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 9468039
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station is able to communicate with a first system using a first air interface protocol (e.g., EVDO) and with a second system using a second air interface protocol (e.g., 1×RTT CDMA). When the first system schedules a page message for transmission to the multi-mode mobile station, the first system may query the second system to determine whether the second air interface protocol is being used for a current call involving the multi-mode mobile station or is being used to attempt establishment of a requested call to the multi-mode mobile station. In the case of a current call, the first system may wait until the call is released before transmitting the page message. In the case of an attempt to establish a requested call, the first system may wait to determine whether the attempt is successful before transmitting the page message.

  • Patent number: 9451554
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for allocating uplink air interface resources in a manner that allows particular user equipment devices (UEs) to apply less attenuation than may be specified more generally for UEs served by a base station of a wireless service provider. The base station may operate on a carrier band, serving UEs that are subscribers of the wireless service provider as well as UEs roaming in the base station's coverage area from another service provider. To avoid uplink transmission power leakage across the edges of the carrier band, the base station may broadcast a message to all the UEs notifying them to attenuate their respective transmission levels. The base station may allocate uplink air interface resources to subscribing UEs from a particular portion of the carrier band that allows them to transmit using less attenuation than roaming UEs and still avoid power leakage across the band edges.

  • Patent number: 9445344
Abstract: It may be determined that a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission schedule from a radio access network (RAN) to wireless communication devices (WCDs) uses HARQ acknowledgment bundling for a first set of two or more data slots, and that the HARQ transmission schedule does not use HARQ acknowledgment bundling for a second set of one or more data slots. It may further be determined that a first WCD supports carrier aggregation when receiving communications from the RAN, and that a second WCD does not support carrier aggregation when receiving communications from the RAN. Based on the first WCD supporting carrier aggregation, the RAN may transmit a first data to the first WCD in the first set of data slots. Based on the second WCD not supporting carrier aggregation, the RAN may transmit a second data to the second WCD in the second set of data slots.

  • Patent number: 9445332
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improved idle handoff a mobile station in a wireless communication system. While idling in a particular sector of the system, the mobile station will select a target sector based on a determination that the target sector has the same number of channels as the current sector, such as the same number of paging channels and perhaps the same number of frequency channels as the current sector. The mobile station will then engage in an idle handoff from the current sector to the selected target sector. By striving to hand off to a sector that has the same number of channels, particularly the same number of paging channels, the mobile station may avoid having to hash onto a channel in the target sector and may thereby minimize the likelihood of missing a page message sent while the mobile station was busy hashing onto the channel.

  • Patent number: 9426828
Abstract: A base station may provide wireless service on an air interface that defines different mutually exclusive groups of random access channel (RACH) instances for different uses. In one example, the air interface may define a first group of RACH instances having groupings of preambles for designating a value of a characteristic, and define a second group of RACH instances that does not have groupings of preambles. As another example, the air interface may define a first group of RACH instances that has groupings of preambles for designating a value of a first characteristic, and define a second group of RACH instances that has groupings of preambles for designating a value of a second characteristic. The base station may then differentially handle random access requests based on whether the base station receives a preamble in a RACH instance of the first group or rather the second group.

  • Patent number: 9363713
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for accounting for network signaling values in handover decisions. A serving base station may receive a message from a served user equipment device (UE) indicating that handover condition is met for handing over to one or more target base stations. The serving base station can determine a respective network signaling value being used by each target base station, and thereby determine how much uplink attenuation the UE would be directed to apply for each potential handover. The serving base station can also determine its downlink power and that the target base stations as measured by the UE. The serving base station can then make a handover decision taking account of a change in uplink attenuation for each potential handover.
