The light emitted from each of the plurality of subpixels may be transmitted through and laterally shifted by the least one light deviator towards a viewer and the at least one light deviator may be mechanically rotatable by a force applied to an outer circumferential region of the at least one light deviator. The controller may control illumination of at least a subset of the plurality of subpixels in synchronization with rotation of the at least one light deviator. Various other apparatus, systems, and methods are also disclosed.

While in a second state, the switchable retardation element modifies the light transmitted through the switchable retardation element by causing a phase shift of a second retardation angle distinct from the first retardation angle. The electrical driver circuit provides a first voltage for placing the switchable retardation element in the first state and a second voltage for placing the switchable retardation element in the second state. The first voltage is greater than the second voltage, the second voltage is a non-zero voltage, and the electrical driver circuit alternatingly provides the first voltage and the second voltage with a predefined frequency.

The array of rotators and the polarization-selective scatterer are disposed between a pair of polarizers. The polarization-selective scatterer only scatters light at one of two orthogonal polarizations, thereby enhancing the achieved extinction ratio of the configurable occluder/dimmer. The configurable occluder/dimmer may be used in the near-eye display to provide occlusion effects rendering added virtual objects opaque, and/or to equalize contrast of the generated virtual imagery across the field of view of the display.
