  • Patent number: 10101287
Abstract: A method for heat blanket certification employs a thermochromatic coating containing one or more chromatic probes which is prepared and applied to a measurement surface. A test layup is created with the heat blanket and a vacuum bagging film. The vacuum bagging film is sealed and a vacuum is drawn through a vacuum probe in the vacuum bagging film. The heat blanket is brought to operating temperature and the thermochromatic coating is illuminated with ultraviolet light. The chromatic probe coloration is then observed for determination of temperature consistency in the heat blanket.

    Assignee: The Boeing Company
Inventors: Jason A. Degaetano, Gary E. Georgeson, John R. Spalding
  • Patent number: 9873527
Abstract: There is provided a system and a method to map a thermal profile of a composite structure during curing in at least one of manufacture or repair of the composite structure. The system has a thermochromatic witness assembly having a first series of probes with a thermochromatic material applied either to a composite lay-up, or applied to a removable material adjacent the composite lay-up. The system further has a process assembly with a heat source to cure the thermochromatic witness assembly to form the composite structure. The system further has a light source to activate the thermochromatic material of the first series of probes to prompt an onset of color changes in the thermochromatic material to determine one or more maximum temperatures of the composite structure, to map the thermal profile of the composite structure during curing in at least one of manufacture or repair of the composite structure.

  • Patent number: 8043453
Abstract: The present application is directed to methods of preparing a wet composite patch for use in various applications, such as, for example, reworking a composite part of an aircraft. The method comprises heating the composite patch to a temperature that causes resin containing gaseous components to flow from the patch through a flow path. The gaseous components are vented from the resin while restricting the flow of resin from the composite patch by restricting the flow of resin through the flow path. Systems for performing the methods of the present application are also disclosed.
