Patent number: 7545600Abstract: A method and combination for mitigating turbulent air flow across an actuator of a data storage device. The combination includes a base deck having a retention cam surface adjacent a mounting pin, and an air diverter having a mounting aperture and a spring portion with a cam follower. The air diverter is confined adjacent the base deck in an operating position by executing the steps of the method to form the combination. The method includes the steps of; providing the base deck, disposing the air diverter onto the mounting pin, attaching a spindle motor with a disc to the base deck, securing an actuator supporting a read/write head to the base deck and affixing a top cover to the base deck, which places the air diverter under a compressive load between the top cover and the base deck thereby fixing the air diverter in the operating position.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2008Date of Patent: June 9, 2009Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Jason A. Sorrell, Frederick P. Renken, Robert A. Alt, David R. Lapp

Patent number: 7362541Abstract: In accordance with various embodiments, a data storage device comprises a sealed housing which encloses a data storage medium. The sealed housing comprises a substantially planar first housing plate with respective length, width and thickness dimensions and a circumferentially extending first peripheral edge, a substantially planar second housing plate with a circumferentially extending second peripheral edge, and a circumferentially extending first sealing member contactingly disposed between the respective first and second peripheral edges. A substantially planar third housing plate extends adjacent the first planar housing plate with respective length and width dimensions substantially corresponding to the length and width dimensions of the first housing plate, and a circumferentially extending third peripheral edge. A circumferentially extending second seal member is contactingly disposed between the second and third peripheral edges to form a hermetic seal for the low density gas.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2007Date of Patent: April 22, 2008Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Frank W. Bernett, George I. Brent, Jason A. Sorrell

Patent number: 7218473Abstract: A disc drive includes a base plate and a structural cover removably attached to the base plate to form an internal environment within the disc drive that is filled with a low density gas such as helium. A sealing cover is permanently attached to the base plate and the structural cover to form a hermetic seal for the low density gas. A first seal secured between the base plate and the removable structural cover permits short term operation of the disc drive with minimal leakage of the low density gas so that the drive can be tested prior to permanent attachment of the sealing cover.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2002Date of Patent: May 15, 2007Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Frank William Bernett, George Inslee Brent, Jason A. Publication number: 20070070596Abstract: A housing has a base that includes a baseplate and a rail. The rail projects outwardly to an impact rim along a bottom edge of the rail. The rail includes a flexible web that couples the impact rim to the baseplate. A projecting contact surface on the impact rim is laterally offset from at least one bending axis through the flexible web. An impact to the contact surface is offset from the bending axis by a moment arm.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 29, 2005Publication date: March 29, 2007Applicant: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Ryan Sievers, Jason Sorrell

Publication number: 20060126216Abstract: An enclosure is provided defining an annular shroud adapted for receivingly engaging a rotatable data storage media. A method is provided for managing fluid flow created by a moving data storage medium, the method comprising circumscribing an annular shroud adjacent to an edge of the medium. A data storage device is provided comprising a rotatable data storage disc, and a fluid flow conditioner for minimizing excitation imparted to the disc by steps for managing fluid flow surrounding the disc.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2004Publication date: June 15, 2006Inventors: Jason Sorrell, Robert Alt
