Patent number: 10466121Abstract: Systems and methods described herein provide a position sensor system configured to sense a relative position between a reference object and a sensed object, where the sensed object has a varying surface. The position sensor system may include at least one force sensor supported by the reference object and positioned adjacent to and in sensory communication with the varying surface. The sensor may be configured to generate a signal related to a force sensed due to a position of the varying surface relative to the sensor. A processor may be configured to determine, using the force signal, the position of the sensed object relative to the sensor. The position sensor system may be used to identify a torque of an elongated vehicle member, for example.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2015Date of Patent: November 5, 2019Assignee: JOYSON SAFETY SYSTEMS ACQUISITION LLCInventors: Jason Carl Lisseman, David William Andrews

Publication number: 20190135325Abstract: Various implementations relate to an operator monitoring system (OMS). Certain implementations include an OMS coupled to a rotatable portion of a steering wheel assembly of a vehicle. For example, the OMS may include an imaging unit, such as a camera, that is coupled to a central hub portion of the steering wheel assembly. The imaging unit has a field of view directed toward one or more occupants in the vehicle and is configured to capture an image signal corresponding to an imaging area in the field of view. The imaging area can be configured to encapsulate an expected position of one or more vehicle occupants. The OMS also includes one or more processing units in electrical communication with the imaging unit that receives and processes the image signal from the imaging unit to determine an occupant state and, in some implementations, provide feedback based on the determined occupant state.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 6, 2018Publication date: May 9, 2019Inventors: Jason Carl Lisseman, Len Cech, Valerie Gardner

Publication number: 20190101989Abstract: A multi-dimensional track pad is described that acts as human-machine interface (HMI). Inputs to the HMI can be made not only using the tradition two-dimensional (X-Y) inputs of a track pad, but also a third dimension, force, and even a fourth dimension, time. Tactile or audible feedback to the inputs can be provided. Methods of using the HMI to control a system are described as well as a track pad system that utilizes the HMI in communication with a processor.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2018Publication date: April 4, 2019Inventors: David Andrews, Ian Campbell, Ryan Diestelhorst, Jason Carl Lisseman, Don Metzger

Patent number: 10179541Abstract: The present invention is directed to a steering apparatus for a vehicle having a including a light element providing indication and warning light signals to the user of the vehicle. The light element can be associated with a PCB mounted to the steering wheel grip for controlling the operation of the light element. The PCB may be thermally coupled to a heat exchange component such that heat from the light element is transferred from the PCB to the steering wheel grip.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2017Date of Patent: January 15, 2019Assignee: JOYSON SAFETY SYSTEMS ACQUISITION LLCInventors: Jason Carl Lisseman, Valerie Dawn Gardner, Dwayne Van'tZelfde, Erick Paul Staszak, Norbert Hubert Mueller, David William Andrews

Publication number: 20180319407Abstract: The disclosed method is stored as computer readable instructions and carried out by a processor that is part of a disclosed occupant monitoring system (OMS). The method starts with the receipt of an external signal by the processor. The external signal can be the starting of the vehicle engine, an indication of semi-autonomous or autonomous driving mode, or an indication that the occupant is seated, is in contact with a steering wheel, and/or is in contact with at least one dashboard control. The receipt of the external signal causes the processor to capture an image, analyze the image to determine if at least one monitoring condition is met, generate an adjustment signal if the monitoring condition is not met, and communicate the adjustment signal to at least one VCS, and repeating the monitoring loop. In some implementations, multiple images are captured and analyzed during the cycling of a monitoring loop.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 8, 2018Publication date: November 8, 2018Inventors: Jason Carl Lisseman, Len Cech, Blaine Dolcetti

Publication number: 20180237050Abstract: Various implementations include a light bar system for a steering wheel of a vehicle that includes a high intensity light source, a light diffusing layer, and an outer lens. For example, in certain implementations, the light diffusing layer is disposed between a plurality of high intensity light emitting diodes (LEDs) and an outer lens, and the light diffusing layer causes the light from the LEDs to appear as a continuous stream of light across a length of the lens and provides sufficiently bright lighting to warn or communicate with the driver in various ambient lighting conditions. In certain implementations, the outer lens is colored to blend in with the rest of the steering wheel when the LEDs are not activated.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 22, 2018Publication date: August 23, 2018Inventors: Valerie D. Gardner, Jason Carl Lisseman, David Ryan Varcoe

Patent number: 10036843Abstract: Various implementation of a light bar warning system for a steering wheel of a vehicle include a liquid crystal display (LCD), a light guide, and at least one light source disposed adjacent the light guide. The LCD and light guide having arcuate shaped surfaces that follow along a portion of the steering wheel rim. Light emitted from the light source is transmitted through the light guide and out of its outer surface into an inner surface of the LCD that is disposed adjacent the light guide. The light is emitted through portions of the LCD that are activated for illumination by an LCD driver. The LCD may provide various types of warnings to the operator, including blind spot warnings, forward collision/proximity warnings, and lane departure warnings, for example.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2016Date of Patent: July 31, 2018Assignee: Joyson Safety Systems Acquisition LLCInventor: Jason Carl Lisseman

Publication number: 20170158126Abstract: Various implementations of a horn system include one or more force sensors disposed on a first portion of a driver air bag module and one or more actuators disposed on a second portion of the driver air bag module. For example, the force sensors may be disposed adjacent a perimeter of a base plate of the driver air bag module, and the actuators may extend inwardly toward the force sensors from an inner surface of a cover of the driver air bag module, or vice versa. To actuate the horn, the cover is moved axially toward the base plate, causing the actuators to apply force to the force sensors. Force signals received from the force sensors are used by one or more processors to determine characteristics of the force received and/or select a control message for communicating to the horn system based on the force signal characteristics.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 2, 2016Publication date: June 8, 2017Inventors: Jason Carl Lisseman, Erick Paul Staszak, David William Andrews
