Patent number: 12172316Abstract: A robotic system for inspecting a part comprises a robot comprising an articulating arm and an end effector, coupled to the articulating arm. The robotic system further includes three or more proximity sensors on the end effector and spaced apart from each other. Each of the proximity sensors is configured to detect a measured distance from the proximity sensor to a surface, such that the end effector is displaced from the surface. The robotic system includes a controller configured to receive measured distances from the proximity sensors. The controller is also configured to orient the end effector to a predetermined orientation based on the measured distances. The controller is further configured to calculate an average of the measured distances. Additionally, the controller is configured to move the end effector to a predetermined operating distance from the surface based on the average of the measured distance.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2021Date of Patent: December 24, 2024Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Jason G. DeStories, Michael R. Mercer, Jeffery Peebles, Patrick C. Scofield, Basilio Penuelas

Publication number: 20240198528Abstract: Apparatus and methods to reduce impact of robot collision and/or avoid robot collision are described herein. An example collision detection device includes a housing to be coupled to an automated robot, a sensor in the housing, a relay in the housing, the relay to be electrically coupled to a safety circuit of the automated robot, and circuitry in the housing. The circuitry is to determine a parameter value based a signal from the sensor, compare the parameter value to a threshold value, and, in response to the parameter value satisfying the threshold value, trigger the relay to stop the automated robot.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 15, 2022Publication date: June 20, 2024Inventors: Jason G. DeStories, Michael R. Mercer, Ashley B. Bruno, Curtis R. Estevo, Jeffrey Peebles, Basilio Penuelas, Blaze Mitanoski

Patent number: 11787132Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for multi-celled pressurizable air bladders. One embodiment is an apparatus that includes a bladder. The bladder includes a casing that encloses an internal volume of the bladder, walls within the bladder that subdivide the internal volume into cells that are airtight with respect to each other, and ducting that couples each of the cells with a source of pressurized gas via a distinct pathway. The apparatus also includes a controller that progressively pressurizes individual cells within the bladder from a first portion of a laminate to a second portion of the laminate by controlling application of gas from the source via the ducting.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2020Date of Patent: October 17, 2023Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Jason G.
