Publication number: 20110257597Abstract: An insertion device and insertion set. The insertion device for inserting at least a portion of at least one piercing member of an insertion set through the skin of a patient includes a device housing, a carrier body and a driver. The carrier body is slidably received within the device housing for movement between an advanced position and a retracted position. The carrier body also includes a receiving structure to support the insertion set in a position with the at least one piercing member oriented for insertion through the skin of the patient at a predetermined angle relative to the skin of the patient upon movement of the carrier body from the retracted position to the advanced position.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2011Publication date: October 20, 2011Inventors: JASON H. SAFABASH, Susan M. McConnell, Randy W. Adair, Jeffery V. Funderburk, April A. Marano, Jeffrey F. Field

Publication number: 20110245715Abstract: A tissue specimen collector includes a collector housing defining an interior, and has a proximal opening and a distal port opposite the proximal opening. The distal port is configured to receive a proximal end of a tubular elongated member of a biopsy probe such that the proximal end can extend into the interior. A tray is releasably attached to the collector housing at the proximal opening. The tray includes a grated portion configured to extend through the proximal opening of the collector housing toward the distal port and into the interior to separate the collector housing to define a tissue chamber and a vacuum chamber, such that a tissue discharge port of the tubular elongated member is able to be positioned in the tissue chamber above the grated portion. The grated portion has a plurality of holes to facilitate fluid communication between the tissue chamber and the vacuum chamber.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 14, 2011Publication date: October 6, 2011Inventors: Richard L. Quick, Martin V. Shabaz, Frank R. Louw, Paul Lubock, Jason H. Safabash

Patent number: 7981051Abstract: The invention is directed to a system and method for separating and collecting one or more tissue specimens from a target site within a patient and flushing the specimen to remove blood, debris and the like before the specimen is removed from the biopsy device. The flow of flushing fluid to the tissue collector is preferably controlled to coincide with delivery of one or more specimens to the collecting tray or basket of the device or after the receipt of the specimen within the tissue collector to ensure that the fluid is applied to a fresh specimen. The tissue tray or basket within the tissue collector has an open or foraminous portion to facilitate removal of fluid, such as the applied fluid and blood, and other debris from the tissue specimens on the tray. Vacuum is provided within the tissue collector, preferably under the tray to remove fluid and debris from the collector interior.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2008Date of Patent: July 19, 2011Assignee: Senorx, Inc.Inventors: Richard L. Quick, Martin V. Shabaz, Frank R. Louw, Paul Lubock, Jason H. Safabash

Publication number: 20100268117Abstract: The invention is directed to a system and device for separating and collecting a tissue specimen from a target site within a patient. The device includes a probe component with an elongated tubular section, a penetrating distal tip and a tissue receiving aperture in the distal end of the tubular section proximal to the distal tip, and a tissue cutting member which is slidably disposed within the probe member to cut a tissue specimen drawn into the interior of the device through the aperture by applying a vacuum to the inner lumen of the tissue cutting member. The device also has a driver component to which the probe component is releasably secured. The driver has a drive member for adjusting the orientation of the tubular section and thus the aperture therein and one or more drive members for moving the tissue cutting member within the tubular section to sever a tissue specimen from tissue extending into the interior of the tubular section through the aperture.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 4, 2010Publication date: October 21, 2010Inventors: Martin V. Shabaz, Richard L. Quick, Frank R. Louw, Paul Lubock, Jason H. Safabash

Publication number: 20100100058Abstract: Embodiments of a micro-vitreoretinal trocar blade may have a top surface and a bottom surface that converge to form cutting edges. Each of the top surface and bottom surface have a large rounded apex to maximize the area of the blade. Each surface also has concave regions that may form the cutting edges. Advancing the MVR trocar blade into tissue causes the tissue to contact the apexes of the top and bottom surfaces. The apexes draw the tissue into contact with the cutting edges. The cutting edges incise the tissue such that the incision is sized to accommodate a trocar cannula. The geometry of the top surface and bottom surface ensure that the features of the blade do not protrude radially outside of the diametral envelope of the shaft.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 22, 2008Publication date: April 22, 2010Inventors: Gregory A. Auchter, Jack Robert Auld, Randal L. Berardi, Harry E. Faller, Dyson W. Hickingbotham, Christopher L. McCollam, Jason H. Safabash, Willard L. Sauer

Publication number: 20100094169Abstract: The invention provides marker delivery devices, assemblies, and methods. Assemblies embodying features of the invention include marker delivery devices having a delivery tube with an orifice, markers, and a plug releasably disposed in the tube occluding the orifice. The plug prevents markers from passing through the orifice before the marker is to be placed at a desired location within a patient's body, prevents ingress of tissue into the bore of the tube, and allows markers to pass out of the orifice when marker delivery is desired. Guidance of a delivery tube to a desired location within a patient's body may include the use of an imaging device, with or without the use of a guide cannula. The plug may itself serve as a marker, and may be the sole marker. Markers may be detectable by ultrasound, X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, and other imaging devices, and may include bioactive elements.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 18, 2009Publication date: April 15, 2010Inventors: Paul Lubock, Jason H. Safabash, Martin Shabaz, John Merritt
