Patent number: 9852227Abstract: An embodiment of the invention provides a method for control for persistent search results and iterative searching where a query from a user is received via a web browser and a web search for the query is performed with a processor. Search results of the web search are displayed in a toolbar of the web browser, wherein at least one of the search results in the toolbar includes a refinement option. The refinement option can include a show me more like this refinement option and/or a show me less like this refinement option. A selected refinement option is received from the user with a user interface; and, refined search results are displayed in the toolbar based on the selected refinement option.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2016Date of Patent: December 26, 2017Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Jason M. Blackwell, Kevin Chiu, Claude J. Elie, Kimberly Knight, Beverly M. Lovelace, John E. MacDonald, IV, Matthew Starr, Marc Wisniewski

Patent number: 8209314Abstract: A method and system is provided for controlling search criteria when searching databases using active controls. In one aspect, a search criteria control bar (SCCB) displays results of a search by identifying category selections and keywords. Category selections may be identified by a unique delimiter and any keywords may also be identified by another unique identifier. A user may optionally narrow a search by selecting any active category or active keyword(s) that may be identified in the results summary by simply clicking on the appropriate choice. This may cause only those pages associated with the selected keyword or category to be displayed. Conversely, a user may alter a search by eliminating a keyword or category from the results by a one-click action. Further, the search and results may be limited by user preferences. In this manner, a user may be able to intuitively control searches with more refinement and efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 2009Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Jason M. Patent number: 8161044Abstract: A system and method of web searching is provided. The method comprises defining one or more user preferred categories and conducting a search within the one or more user preferred categories based upon search criteria by comparing the search criteria to content information within each of the one or more user preferred categories. The method further includes displaying search results associated with each of the preferred categories which have matching criteria based on the conducted search.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2005Date of Patent: April 17, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Jason M. Blackwell, Claude J. Elie, Danny R. Hager, Clare T. Kibler

Patent number: 7962519Abstract: In general, the present invention allows one to define both a hierarchy with one or more peers and no parents (e.g., one or more blades and no chassis) and a hierarchy with one or more peers and a parent (e.g., one or more blades and a chassis) as long as the relationships are valid. Rather than relying on a user's a priori knowledge of the hierarchical relationships, this invention allows a user to select any starting point and then drive in any desired direction. Despite this flexibility, the invention still allows rules for permissible relationships to be enforced. Thus, driving is limited by the relationships extant in the underlying data, or the known combining rules.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2007Date of Patent: June 14, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Clare T. Kibler, Jason M. Blackwell, Robert A. Morgan

Publication number: 20110106834Abstract: A facet peer category navigation system enables enhanced navigation of a faceted search system by a facet peer agent enabled enhanced navigation of a faceted search system by identifying a plurality of targets in a database searchable by a faceted search system. A web page configured to run the faceted search system is displayed, and responsive to a display of a target anywhere on the web page and to an activation of a control associated with the target, a list of all peer targets of the target is displayed in a window on the web page.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 29, 2009Publication date: May 5, 2011Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Jason M.
