    Abstract: Apparatus and methods for analyzing single molecule and performing nucleic acid sequencing. An apparatus can include an assay chip that includes multiple pixels with sample wells configured to receive a sample, which, when excited, emits emission energy; at least one element for directing the emission energy in a particular direction; and a light path along which the emission energy travels from the sample well toward a sensor. The apparatus also includes an instrument that interfaces with the assay chip. The instrument includes an excitation light source for exciting the sample in each sample well; a plurality of sensors corresponding the sample wells. Each sensor may detect emission energy from a sample in a respective sample well. The instrument includes at least one optical element that directs the emission energy from each sample well towards a respective sensor of the plurality of sensors.

The present invention utilizes real-time heat rates for a plurality of power generating units, e.g., steam turbines, and corresponding emission data for each unit, to dispatch electrical power at the lowest possible cost. The method of the present invention also compares the cost associated with generating power to the cost to purchase power from other electric utilities to achieve maximum cost savings associated with the dispatching of the electrical power.

    Abstract: A video communications system is provided that makes it possible for home viewers to download a movie in digital format from a large archive library, store the digital movie file locally, and view the movie at any convenient time. The system may limit access to particular movies and provides an accounting system that is used to bill downloads to the viewer's account as well as to post royalty payments to movie providers. Frequently viewed movies are quickly accessible via random access mass storage while infrequently viewed movies may be called up from a streaming tape archive. The digitalization of the program source allows for playback at various speeds, as well as pause, with no distortion or loss in picture quality.
