  • Publication number: 20120161679
Abstract: A method of actively discharging a common bus (116) of a machine (100) having an engine (102), a generator (112), a traction motor (124) and one or more auxiliary devices (126) is provided. The method may monitor a speed of the engine (102) with respect to a first threshold, monitor a voltage of the common bus (116) with respect to a second threshold, and enable one or more of the generator (112), the motor (124) and the auxiliary devices (126) if the engine speed falls below the first threshold and the voltage exceeds the second threshold so as to discharge voltage from the common bus (116).

  • Publication number: 20120137869
Abstract: An automatic rifle bolt carrier with a fluted boss for the AR15/M16 family of firearms has been provided. The rear of the bolt carrier has been provided with a boss having bearing surfaces which are in operational contact with the interior of the host firearm's upper receiver to prevent the carrier from tilting while it is reciprocating during normal operation. The boss and rearward end of the bolt carrier are provided with flutes which allow water to flow between the buffer tube and upper receiver while the bolt carrier is reciprocating during normal operation, enabling a properly equipped firearm to be used during over the beach operations. The bolt carrier also includes a semi-circular relief cut about the top of its backmost end which is perpendicular to the axis of the bolt carrier.

  • Publication number: 20120131920
Abstract: Waste heat energy conversion cycles, systems and devices use multiple waste heat exchangers arranged in series in a waste heat stream, and multiple thermodynamic cycles run in parallel with the waste heat exchangers in order to maximize thermal energy extraction from the waste heat stream by a working fluid. The parallel cycles operate in different temperature ranges with a lower temperature work output used to drive a working fluid pump. A working fluid mass management system is integrated into or connected to the cycles.

  • Patent number: 8181759
Abstract: A bumper for use at a loading dock has two ranges of front-to-back movement: one range for sealing the gap that might otherwise exist between the rear edge of a truck and the front face of the bumper and a second range for absorbing the impact of the truck backing into the dock. In some cases, a spring provides a relatively light sealing force between the bumper and the truck, and a compressible core provides a much greater impact-absorbing force that helps stop the rearward movement of the truck. In some embodiments, the bumper pivots by gravity when operating in the sealing range.

  • Publication number: 20120048839
Abstract: The invention relates to shape memory alloys. In particular, the invention relates to a shape memory alloy arrangement that includes a shape memory alloy member that is configured to undergo transformation between marten site and austenite phases in response to a change in temperature of the shape memory alloy member. The arrangement also includes a heat conductive material in contact with the shape memory alloy member wherein the heat conductive material is operable for controlling the transfer of heat to or from the shape memory alloy member by conduction. The invention also relates to a shape memory alloy actuator including the shape memory alloy arrangement of the invention. The shape memory alloy arrangement is configured to be connected to a movable object and to move the object in response to a change in temperature of the shape memory alloy member.

  • Patent number: 8070899
Abstract: A method of positioning a tape preform as a layer onto a resistive device substrate during the manufacture of a layered resistive device is provided. The method includes locating the tape preform in a predetermined position and translating one or more of the following relative to each other until a portion of the positioning device engages the tape preform: a positioning device, the resistive device substrate, and the tape preform. The method also includes continuing the translation until the tape preform engages the resistive device substrate and continuing the translation such that components of the positioning device progressively translate around the resistive device substrate and subsequently position the tape preform onto the resistive device substrate. In some forms, the method includes using a controller and/or applying a predetermined cycle of temperature, pressure, and time to the substrate and tape preform.

  • Patent number: 8061402
Abstract: An apparatus for positioning a tape preform as a layer onto a substrate during the manufacture of a layered resistive device is provided. The apparatus includes at least one positioning member, wherein the positioning member defines a proximal end portion and a distal end portion. The apparatus also includes a contact member adapted to engage the tape preform against the substrate. The contact member and the distal end portion of the positioning member are configured to position the tape preform onto the substrate.

  • Patent number: 7749694
Abstract: This invention provides a class of binding proteins with a range of binding specificities and affinities based upon variation at select amino acid positions within a scaffold. The variable positions may be readily modified to produce a library of binding proteins with different binding specificities and affinities. The library may be screened to identify one or more as binding a ligand of interest. Compositions comprising the binding proteins, as well as methods of using the binding proteins are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20090264149
Abstract: A handheld device includes an FM receiver to receive FM radio signals and a processor that is configured to monitor Radio Data System (RDS) data within FM radio broadcasts and to activate an application when a particular RDS data pattern is received. Methods for recognizing and using the RDS data to activate or initiate applications on the handheld device enable a wide range of uses and new services. A server may provide data to the handheld device in response to queries which are based on or include part of the RDS data. Operating in conjunction with FM radio broadcasters, the handheld device and the server provide a data communication system that can deliver useful services and additional entertainment options for users.
