    Abstract: A speaker system includes a first array of transducers in a speaker enclosure and, and at least a second array of transducers in the speaker enclosure. The second array is a low-frequency array and the first array is a high-frequency array. The transducers in the first array are configured to have an operating frequency region covering at least the frequency ranges of the first array and the second array, and the transducers in the second are configured to have an operating frequency region covering at least the frequency ranges of the first array and the second array. The speaker system further includes an input port, and a controller operatively coupled with the input port. The controller is configured to provide an electronic-audio signal to the transducers such that the first array and the second array are tuned to different center frequencies and are a two stage dipole beamforming array.

A frequency dependent shunting network, such as a low pass filter, is applied to one of the drivers so as to gradually mute the one driver as a desired frequency is approached. The result is an aesthetically pleasing speaker that has dual in-plane drivers and that produces superior sound quality throughout the entire frequency range of the speaker, including those ranges in which dual, in plane, drivers tend to acoustically interfere with each other.

    Abstract: Various embodiments use combinations of different methods for creating virtual surround. Some of the methods used in various embodiments include: dipole beamforming, multi-stage arrays, transducer directionality, and enclosure shading. In general, each of these methods may operate over a specific frequency band in various embodiments. The use of multiple methods to create virtual sound can increase the virtual sound effect and better maintain sound quality compared to the use of a single method for creating virtual surround. Each method used to create virtual surround can be optimized for a specific system configuration based on factors such as the physical set-up of the transducers, the size and shape of the enclosure, and the input signal configuration. Various embodiments allow for an intensity difference to be created for a listener across a wide range of frequencies in order to produce constant directionality.

    Abstract: An economical and compact flat panel loudspeaker is disclosed that effectively dampens undesirable standing waves that form in the diaphragm without adversely affecting the frequency response. The diaphragm is preferably anisotropic, and has at least one compliant compressed dampening member transposed between it and a substantially planar support. The dampening member is preferably positioned at or near at least one mode of constructive or destructive interference on the diaphragm, and urges the diaphragm away from the planar support, thereby placing as light bending force on the diaphragm, and a slight compression force on the dampening member. Accordingly, the dampening member serves as a sink for transferring undesirable standing waves from the diaphragm to the planar support. In a preferred embodiment, the dampening member is an elongated strip of compliant foam rigidly secured to the diaphragm and planar support and extending through a plurality of modes on the diaphragm.

    Abstract: An economical and compact dual-chamber loudspeaker includes a small driver received within a partition extending between, and in acoustical and pneumatic communication with, both a front and a back chamber, each of which has a relatively small volume. An elongated vent is in acoustical and pneumatic communication between the front and back chamber at a substantially planar opening in the partition. The drone cone is in acoustical and pneumatic communication between the front chamber and the outside environment at a substantially planar opening in the housing. The two openings are spaced apart and generally parallel to each other. In a preferred embodiment, the volume of the chambers is minimized by securing an elongated concentric vent around the vent extending between the front and back chambers.
