Patent number: 10808529Abstract: A method for surface logging a well uses a plurality of polymeric taggants distinguishable from each other. The method includes selecting the polymeric taggants that have ceiling temperatures that do not interfere with pyrograms from source rock decomposition and adding each of the plurality of polymeric taggants to a circulating drilling fluid in a sequence while drilling the well. A sample of drill cuttings carried by the circulating drilling fluid is then taken. The method also includes measuring, using pyrolysis-gas chromatographymass spectrometry, concentrations of individual polymeric taggants attached to the drill cuttings in the sample and analyzing, using pyrolysis-gas chromatographymass spectrometry, properties of the drill cuttings. A depth associated with the sample is identified based, at least in part, on the measured concentrations of individual polymeric taggants and on the sequence.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2018Date of Patent: October 20, 2020Assignee: Saudi Arabian Oil CompanyInventors: Hooisweng Ow, Jason R. Cox, Martin E. Poitzsch, Daniel T. Georgi, Alberto F. Marsala

Patent number: 10704381Abstract: Tracing subterranean fluid flow includes providing a first polymeric tracer to a first injector, collecting a first aqueous sample from a first producer, and assessing the presence of the first polymeric tracer in the first aqueous sample. The first polymeric tracer includes a first polymer formed from at least a first monomer. The presence of the first polymeric tracer in the first aqueous sample is assessed by removing water from the first aqueous sample to yield a first dehydrated sample. pyrolyzing the first dehydrated sample to yield a first gaseous sample, and assessing the presence of a pyrolization product of the first polymer in the first gaseous sample. The presence of the pyrolization product of the first polymer in the first gaseous sample is indicative of the presence of a first subterranean flow pathway between the first injector location and the first producer location.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2019Date of Patent: July 7, 2020Assignee: Saudi Arabian Oil CompanyInventor: Jason R. Publication number: 20190338634Abstract: A method includes obtaining a sample of a fluid from a subterranean zone while the fluid is being extracted from the zone. A chemical composition of the sample is measured. A temperature and a pressure of the subterranean zone are measured. The measured properties are associated with a time point. The measured properties are incorporated into a set of historical data. A chemical composition of a fluid to be extracted from the subterranean zone at a future time point is determined based on the set of historical data. A presence of a liquid phase in the fluid to be extracted from the subterranean zone at the future time point is determined. A flow rate of the fluid being extracted from the subterranean zone is adjusted in response to determining the presence of the liquid phase in the fluid to be extracted from the subterranean zone at the future time point.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 19, 2019Publication date: November 7, 2019Applicant: Saudi Arabian Oil CompanyInventors: Vinay Raman, Anthony Andrew Kmetz, II, Jason R.
