Patent number: 9565365Abstract: A portable electronic device includes a camera and a display switchable between a portrait mode and a landscape mode in response to an inertial sensor. When it is determined that the display mode should be switched in response to movement of the device, a feature of a user of the device, such as the user's face, is imaged with the camera. If the imaged feature changes orientation with respect to the display by less than a threshold amount, then the switch in display mode is disabled and the display remains in its current mode. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2014Date of Patent: February 7, 2017Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Koji Gardiner, E-Cheng Chang, Jason Rukes

Patent number: 8593534Abstract: An automated image capture mode of a camera in an electronic device insures that a particular subject appears in the captured image. An image of the particular subject, which may be the photographer, is initially captured. Subsequently, another image capture is automatically triggered when the same subject is detected within the camera's field of view. In one embodiment, a motion sensor within the device may be employed to begin a search for the subject, when the camera is subjected to a sudden movement. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2010Date of Patent: November 26, 2013Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Koji Gardiner, E-Cheng Chang, Jason Rukes

Publication number: 20130083205Abstract: A test chart can be used to test sharpness performance of an imaging system's full image field by having a sharpness inspection area formed of a plurality of identical visual elements that abut each other leaving no gaps to thereby form a mosaic. Each visual element includes a plurality of groups of differently oriented contrasting lines. The mosaic may fill an entire image captured by an imager. Thus, a test system can image the chart to objectively assess the performance of the imaging system in terms of image quality (e.g. sharpness, tilt, etc) throughout the entire spatial area of the captured image. The size of the chart and spatial frequency spacing) of the visual element lines can be selected to test an imaging system's full field sharpness at selected spatial frequencies. The full field sharpness results more quickly and accurately determine different aspects of a given imaging system.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2011Publication date: April 4, 2013Inventors: Mark N. Gamadia, Fei Wu, Shizhe Shen, Jason Rukes

Publication number: 20110102630Abstract: Several methods and apparatuses for adjusting image data during image processing based on device specific information (e.g., location, orientation) for image capturing devices are described. In one embodiment, after having powered on the device and placing it in image capture mode, a location function determines location data of the device including a regional location. Next, an image capture function begins execution which captures one or more images of a scene that is before the camera lens. Next, adaptive image signal processing can occur based on the location data. For example, color adjustments (e.g., white balance, hue, saturation), sharpening, and contrast parameters for a given region may be adjusted during the image processing.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2009Publication date: May 5, 2011Inventor: Jason Rukes
