  • Patent number: 11343681
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for dynamically adjusting the beamform of an antenna array. An intended beamform, which should ideally be propagated by an antenna array based on a supply of a first set of signals, may not be realized if one or more antenna elements of the antenna array are experiencing a fault. Utilizing various methods, one or more faulty antenna elements of the antenna array are identified and a second set of signals is calculated that, when propagated by one or more operational antenna elements, yield an optimized beamform, wherein the optimized beamform at least partially recovers a portion of a coverage gap.

  • Patent number: 10993242
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for dynamic performance of antenna calibration. To ensure channel reciprocity of downlink and uplink channels, antenna calibration must be performed with some degree of regularity. The present disclosure includes systems and methods for performing antenna calibration, wherein noise levels are determined at various subframes of wireless telecommunication frame structures as a basis for determining when the calibration signal should be transmitted in an OFDM symbol. Utilizing the disclosed systems and methods yields preferred antenna calibration, avoiding gain degradations caused by decreases in propagation performance.

  • Patent number: 9572198
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for inter-technology diversity. A transmitting device may concurrently transmit a communication unit, such as a data packet, on two or more different air interfaces to a receiving device. The receiving device may concurrently receive the two or more transmissions on two or more corresponding air interfaces, and may then apply forward error correction to the two or more received communication unit in order to recover an error-free version of the communication unit. The transmitting device could be a multi-modal base station (or other access element) of a wireless communication system, and the receiving device could be a multi-modal access terminal (AT) or other user equipment (UE). Additionally or alternatively, the transmitting device could be an AT or UE, and the receiving device could be a base station.

  • Patent number: 9313714
Abstract: A method and a communication device for accessing a communication system are disclosed. The method includes determining that an application requesting access to the communication system requires preferred access to the communication system and requesting access to the communication system using a least preferred access channel from a preferred roaming list comprising a plurality of access channels. An access node of a communication system is further disclosed. The access node includes a processor to determine whether the communication system supports a preferred access to the communication system by at least one authorized communication device of the plurality of communication devices, and transmit an indication that the communication system supports the preferred access to the communication system by the at least one authorized communication device.

  • Patent number: 8249546
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for improving access to emergency services via a communication system including a shared wireless communications medium. A requesting wireless communications device receives dialed digits matching a predetermined dialed destination associated with an emergency contact and attempts to place a call to the dialed destination. Responsive to a failure of the attempt to place the call and to the matching, the requesting wireless communications device broadcasts a signal to cause at least one nearby wireless communications device to release at least a portion of communication system resources currently in use so as to thereby allow the released communication system resources to be subsequently used by the requesting wireless communications device. The requesting wireless communications device may then re-attempt the call with improved chances of connecting in light of the released resources.

  • Patent number: 8112083
Abstract: A method for handling registration requests in a cellular wireless communication system. The method includes determining that an air interface in the cellular wireless communication system has at least a threshold level of load. The method further includes, in response to the determination that the system has at lease a threshold level of load, reducing a frequency at which mobile stations register with the cellular wireless communication system via the air interface.

  • Patent number: 8107438
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for initiating a handoff of a wireless access terminal based on a set of one or more factors including the determined value of the Reverse Activity Bit (RAB). The set of one or more factors may also further include (i) a determined round-trip delay for a bi-directional communications link between the first wireless access node and the wireless access terminal, wherein the bi-directional communications link comprises a forward link from the first wireless access node to the wireless access terminal and a reverse link from the wireless access terminal to the first wireless access node, and/or (ii) a determined forward-link signal-strength indicator for a forward link from the first wireless access node to the wireless access terminal.

  • Patent number: 7894816
Abstract: A mobile station in an idle state is associated with a current sector-carrier that has a current pilot channel at a current carrier frequency. In response to a request to originate a call, the mobile station compares its current sector-carrier with one or more candidate sector-carriers that have pilot channels at carrier frequencies distinct from the current carrier frequency. The mobile station measures received signal strengths of the current carrier frequency and the one or more candidate carrier frequencies and measures pilot signal levels of the current pilot channel and the one or more candidate pilot channels. If a candidate sector-carrier has a carrier frequency with a received signal strength that exceeds that of the current sector-carrier, and has a pilot channel with a pilot signal level that exceeds that of the current sector-carrier, the mobile station uses that candidate sector-carrier to transmit a call origination message.

  • Patent number: 7787496
Abstract: Packets are broken into fragments when received by a radio network controller. The fragments are sized according to the network connection that are to receive the fragments. With a T-1 connection, the radio network controller attempts to create fragments of a packet with a maximum size of 1200 bytes. The radio network controller also attempts to send fragments of the same packet across the same network connection or T-1 line when multiple network connections or multiple T-1 lines exist.

  • Patent number: 7725122
Abstract: A method and system for controlling switching of an access terminals between wireless coverage areas such as cell sectors. A measure of actual level of service, such as throughput, provided to the access terminal across the combination of wireless coverage areas over time is determined. Further, for each wireless coverage area, a measure of predicted level of service, such as throughput, that would likely be provided to the access terminal if it operated in just that wireless coverage area is determined. If the actual level of service is greater than each predicted level of service, then the access terminal is allowed to continue switching between wireless coverage areas. On the other hand, if at least one of the predicted levels of service is greater than the actual level of service, then the access terminal is restricted to the wireless coverage area where the level of service is deemed greater.

  • Patent number: 7050804
Abstract: A method of improving mobile communication hard handoffs comprises receiving signal quality information for a first pilot signal of a first frequency, the first pilot signal being from a first cellular site and receiving signal quality information for a second pilot signal of the first frequency, the second pilot signal being from a second cellular site. The method further includes generating an output display that includes first predicted locations for hard handoffs from the first cellular site to the second cellular site. The output display is generated based on a parameter of a first value that is representative of a ratio between the strength of the second pilot signal relative to the combined strength of, at least, the second pilot signal and the first pilot signal. The method still further comprises modifying the parameter from the first value to a second value and regenerating the output display to include second predicted hard handoff locations.
