  • Publication number: 20100161070
Abstract: An orthopaedic prosthesis includes a curved outer surface configured to abut a patient's bone when the orthopaedic prosthesis is implanted therein. The outer surface may or may not be electrically conductive. A channel is defined in the outer surface and extends from a rim of the outer surface to a location on the outer surface. One or more electrical conductors is positioned in the channel and extends outwardly from the channel at the rim of the outer surface. A switch is positioned at the first location and is configured to establish an electrical connection between the electrical conductor and the outer surface and/or another electrical conductor when the first location of the outer surface contacts the patient's bone. The switch may be embodied as an end of the electrical conductor or a more complex switch such as a push-button type switch.

  • Publication number: 20090088674
Abstract: A method and system for designing a patient-specific orthopaedic surgical instrument includes coupling a knee sleeve to a leg of the patient. The knee sleeve includes sensors configured to generate sensor data indicate of the position of the respective sensor. The method also include determining angulation data indicative of the angulation of the knee based on the sensor data. The angulation data may be indicative of, for example, the ligament laxity of the knee. The method may also include generating a medical image(s) of the knee. The design of the patient-specific orthopaedic surgical instrument is determined based on the angulation data and the medical image(s).

  • Patent number: 7195645
Abstract: A joint endoprosthesis system has first and second prosthetic components. The second prosthetic component has a bearing surface. The interface of the bearing surface and the first prosthetic component defines the joint articulation. A signal source and sensor are affixed on opposite sides of the joint articulation. The signal source generates a first signal that is received by the sensor. The sensor generates a second signal that has a characteristic that varies depending on the distance between the sensor and the signal source. A transmitter transmits a signal. The signal has a characteristic that varies depending on the characteristic of the second signal. This system can be used to measure a dimension of the joint space and to determine whether a dimension of the joint space has changed over time. The system may alternatively use magnets and magnetic sensors.
