Patent number: 10042887Abstract: According to one embodiment of the present invention, a system for processes a query for accessing data within one or more database objects stores an element of a database object among a plurality of different storage regions. Each storage region is associated with first and second range values indicating a value range for element values within that storage region. The system examines the first and second range values for the storage regions of each database object element and determines an effectiveness value representing a degree of overlap between the storage regions of that database object element. The system determines a selectivity model for the storage regions for each database object utilizing the effectiveness value, determines a query plan based on the selectivity model, and executes the query plan. Embodiments of the present invention further include a method and computer program product for processing a query in substantially the same manners.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2014Date of Patent: August 7, 2018Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Garth A. Dickie, Jay B. Wolf

Patent number: 7877472Abstract: A method of monitoring an element in a computer network including monitoring a preselected variable relating to that element; defining a threshold for the monitored preselected variable; establishing a sliding window in time; repeatedly generating a time above threshold value, the time above threshold value being a measure of an amount of time during which the monitored variable exceeded the threshold during the sliding window of time; detecting when the time above threshold value exceeds a condition window value; and in response to detecting when the time above threshold value exceeds the condition window, generating an alarm.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2009Date of Patent: January 25, 2011Assignee: Computer Associates Think, Inc.Inventors: Mark W. Sylor, George Iglesias, Jay B. Wolf, Will C. Lauer, Lawrence A. Stabile

Patent number: 6278694Abstract: A method for collecting and reporting monitored data for network traffic, which has been accumulated by a plurality of remote probes. The method includes making a series of polling requests for lists of monitoring data to each probe and receiving the requested lists. Each list has traffic count values that are identified by at least a sampling time, a source address, a destination address and a probe identifier. The method also includes calculating the traffic observed by each probe between successive sampling times and apportioning the calculated traffic data among a single set of consecutive temporal intervals and selecting best counts to avoid overcounting.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1999Date of Patent: August 21, 2001Assignee: Concord Communications Inc.Inventors: Jay B.
