    Abstract: This disclosure describes systems, methods, and computer program products for authoring content for digital books. In some implementations, a single graphical user interface (GUI) is presented that allows an author to design a layout for the digital book, including editing text and inserting various types of interactive elements in the text. The GUI functions as both a digital book layout design tool and a word processor to facilitate the building of a digital book. The relative page location of inserted widgets can be determined by a user-selectable anchor point placed within the text. An outline view of the digital book can be created and presented in the GUI based on a hierarchical structure determined by paragraph styles applied to the text. The GUI can provide a hybrid glossary and index page for allowing the author to create and manage a glossary and index for the digital book.

    Abstract: Various techniques are disclosed for managing and modifying data items. In some embodiments, a first data item can be selected for password protection via establishing an active secured user session according to a set of user credentials. Thereafter, subsequent data items can be selected for password protection using the same set of user credentials while the secured user session remains active. In some embodiments, a gesture input can be received by a touch interface. The input can be detected, and when the input is recognized as a command for creating an extension of a work space associated with a data item, then the extension of the work space is generated. In some embodiments, the gesture input received by the touch interface is recognized as a command for creating a new work space associated with the data item such that a new work space is generated upon recognizing the input.

The first document-browsing mode, accessed through a first UI item of several top-level UI items, displays several selectable document channel items corresponding to previously-selected document channels. Selection of one of the selectable document channel items causes the document viewing application to present a set of documents related to the document channel corresponding to the particular selectable item. The second document-browsing mode, accessed through a second UI item of the several top-level UI items, displays several selectable document panes corresponding to documents related to several of the previously-selected channels.

When placing the object in the section of text, the word processor adds a specified amount of white space on a set of sides of the object. The word processor then places text from the section of text on at least a first side and a second side of the object. After placing the text, the word processor determines if the text on the first side of the object is located further from the object than the text on the second side of the object. If so, the word processor adjusts the white space on the first side of the object so that the text on the first side of the object is located closer to the object.

    Abstract: Some embodiments described herein provide a content publishing tool that includes a document-sampling tool for generating a sample document from a full-length document. In some embodiments, the document-sampling tool allows a publisher to identify a section of a document and generate a sample document that includes a selection of pages from that section. The sample document may be generated using a predefined percentage of the pages of the section up to a maximum of a predefined number of pages. The heuristics of the sample generation may also specify that the sample document include a minimum of some number of pages.

During operation, upon receiving a command to move an object in the document, the system moves the object in the document. When moving the object in the document, the system dynamically arranges other content in the document with respect to the object. Upon receiving a command to place the object in a specified location while moving the object, the system places the object at the specified location and leaves the other content arranged with respect to the object in accordance with a most recent dynamic arrangement. After placing the object at the specified location, the system determines an anchor location for an anchor for the object and places an anchor for the object in the anchor location.

    Abstract: The described embodiments provide a system for formatting a document in a word processor. The system starts by performing at least one operation on an object in a section of text in the document. Before the operation is performed on the object, the text in the section of text is placed around the object in accordance with a first wrapping behavior. After performing the operation on the object, the system determines a second wrapping behavior for the text in the section of text around the object based on a location of the object in the section of text and a size of the object. The system then places the text around the object in accordance with the second wrapping behavior.
