    Abstract: An attachment to the top of the ullage rod tube of an engine is equipped with a block of resilient material, such as foam, against which the rod can be pushed as it is withdrawn from the crank case to automatically and simultaneously wipe the face of the rod so it can be read without the use of other wiping means. The position of the block is such that is does not interfere with reinsertion of the rod into the tube.
