  • Publication number: 20070250604
Abstract: A system and method for allocating the nearest available physical memory in a distributed, shared memory system. In various embodiments, a processor node may broadcast a memory request to a first subset of nodes connected to it via a communication network. In some embodiments, if none of these nodes is able to satisfy the request, the processor node may broadcast the request to additional subsets of nodes. In some embodiments, each node of the first subset of nodes may be removed from the processor node by one network hop and each node of the additional subsets of nodes may be removed from the processor node by no more than an iteratively increasing number of network hops. In some embodiments, the processor node may send an acknowledgment to one node that can fulfill the request and a negative acknowledgement to other nodes that can fulfill the request.

  • Publication number: 20070095630
Abstract: A currency evaluation device for receiving a currency bill having a magnetic attribute and evaluating the currency bill comprises a magnetic scanhead disposed adjacent to a bill evaluation region, a memory adapted to store master magnetic characteristic information corresponding to a plurality of types of currency bills, and an evaluating unit. The scanhead includes a plurality of closely spaced magnetic sensors each adapted to detect the presence of a magnetic attribute of the bill. The plurality of magnetic sensors cover a substantial portion of a dimension of a bill. The scanhead is adapted to retrieve magnetic characteristic information from the currency bill.

  • Publication number: 20060294435
Abstract: A method for checkpointing a system that includes receiving a stop command by an executing thread from a master, wherein the executing thread executes an operating system, continuing execution of the executing thread until a checkpoint is reached after receiving the stop command, halting execution of the executing thread at the checkpoint, and checkpointing the system by storing a state and a snapshot of memory.

  • Publication number: 20060078186
Abstract: A magnetic detection system for authenticating a document includes a first magnetic scanhead adapted to create a first magnetic field for saturating the magnetization of an area on each of the bills. The magnetic detection system further includes a second magnetic scanhead with an electromagnet. The electromagnet is capable of creating a second magnetic field of adjustable intensity. The second magnetic field is the opposite polarity of the first magnetic field. The intensity of the second magnetic field is adjusted by changing the amount of current supplied to the electromagnet. The amount of current supplied to the electromagnet is based upon a characteristic of the document to be authenticated.

  • Patent number: 6819517
Abstract: A method of detecting a leak of low-density gas from an enclosure containing a rotating storage disc includes monitoring a signal which varies in response to variations in the concentration of the low-density gas in the enclosure. Additional quantities of the low-density gas are added to the enclosure when the monitored signal indicates that the concentration has dropped below a predetermined level. Monitoring the concentration of the low-density gas may include monitoring actual concentration levels of the gas using a pressure sensor located within the enclosure or monitoring disc mode vibration amplitudes using an accelerometer attached to the enclosure. Indirect monitoring of the vibration amplitudes may also be accomplished using sensors such as a laser Doppler vibrometer, a capacitance probe or the servo head position feedback circuitry found within a disc drive or a dedicated servo track writer.

  • Patent number: 6570360
Abstract: A method and system for driving a phase of an electrical motor are disclosed. The method and system detect the back electromotive force being generated by a coil. The back electromotive force is amplified or attenuated to a level necessary to drive the motor at a desired speed and is fed back into the coil. The detected back electromotive force signal that drives the motor is proportional to, in phase with, and at the same frequency as the back electromotive force signal being generated by the coil. Using the back electromotive force to produce the drive signal permits autosynchronization of the drive signal without use of position sensors and reduces acoustic noise and velocity modulation associated with sudden torque shifts.

  • Patent number: 6330828
Abstract: An apparatus for subjecting a disc drive to rotational vibration test profiles includes a mounting base, a disc drive mounting plate, and a rotary vibration motor assembly mounted between the mounting plate and the base in which the disc drive mounting plate may be vibrationally rotated about an axis through the base and plate. The motor assembly preferably includes a plurality of voice coil motors mounted and radially spaced about a tubular shaft supporting the disc drive mounting plate. The voice coil motors are connected and driven in series to impart the rotational vibrational profile to the disc drive mounted on the mounting plate. The method involves providing a support structure, a rotatable shaft carried by the support structure, a voice coil motor connected to the shaft for reciprocally rotating the shaft, mounting a device to be tested on the shaft, and applying a current to the voice coil motor to reciprocally rotate the shaft to vibrate the device.
