  • Patent number: 8938217
Abstract: An accessory communicates with a portable media device (“PMD”) to store tags associated with broadcasts in a file maintained in a storage medium of the accessory, where the tags contain information descriptive of a subset of the broadcast content. In one embodiment, the accessory sends commands to the PMD to create or open a tag file that resides on the PMD, write one or more tags to the file, and close the file. Stored tags can be used to access (e.g., purchase) tagged content by communicating with a media asset delivery service either via a host computer or directly from the PMD.

  • Patent number: 8095713
Abstract: A smart cable apparatus includes resources that provide for additional functionality such as cable authentication and cable identification. The cable apparatus can be configured for coupling an electronic device such as a media player to other electronic devices such as media player accessories. The cable apparatus includes one or more processing components that can be integrated as part of the cable apparatus. The one or more processing components can be configured to identify the type of signal the cable apparatus is intended to carry, and to communicate that information to the electronic device to which it is connected. The one or more processing components can also be configured to process authentication inquires to indicate whether the cable apparatus is an authorized accessory for the electronic device.

  • Publication number: 20070028006
Abstract: A method, system and connector interface for transferring stored data between a media player and an accessory is disclosed. The method and system comprises obtaining by one of the media player and the accessory a unique identifier for a particular file stored in the other of the media player and the accessory; and returning the unique identifier with the stored file data to the one of the media player and the accessory. The system and method includes utilizing the stored file by the one of the media player or the accessory. In the method, system and connector interface in accordance with the present invention, accessories and media players are able to retrieve and store data utilizing an arbitrary format. This data is opaque to any protocol used by the media player and requires no parsing or interpretation. To provide this facility, a plurality of commands allows both media players and accessories to present a simple file system. The plurality of commands could be utilized in a variety of environments.
