  • Publication number: 20100123584
Abstract: A method for embedding a RFID tag in a tire includes: selecting a compound having compatible permittivity and conductivity with operation of a tag dipole antenna; embedding a tag transponder device and at least a portion of the dipole antenna within the compound; orienting the tag to place a longitudinal axis of the dipole antenna perpendicular to cords of a tire ply in an uncured tire; and placing the tag between a tire apex and a tire sidewall of the uncured tire, at a predetermined distance above an ending of the tire ply. The tag may be positioned axially between a tire chafer ending and a tire apex ending and mounted to the tire apex a distance of at least 10 mm above the ply ending. The method may include substantially encapsulating the transponder device and coupled ends of the dipole antenna in the compound; and extending from the encapsulated dipole coupled ends compound-free dipole end segments.

  • Publication number: 20100122757
Abstract: A tire and electronic device assembly includes an electronic device in which a transponder tag is coupled to a dipole antenna formed by first and second elongate antenna segments. The transponder tag and at least a portion of the dipole antenna are at least partially embedded within a compound having compatible permittivity and conductivity with operation of the dipole antenna and the electronic device is mounted to the tire apex in a position between the tire apex and the tire sidewall at a predetermined distance above an ending of the tire ply and in an orientation placing a longitudinal axis of the dipole antenna perpendicular to the cords of the tire ply.

  • Patent number: 6659148
Abstract: The tire of the invention incorporates an active nylon flipper in each bead region. The flipper is active in the sense that it actively absorbs differential shearing strains that arise between each turnup end of the ply and each rigid metal bead during heavy-duty service. In conjunction with each of the two flippers, a chipper protects the portion of the ply lying closest to the wheel rim when the tire is mounted. A nylon patch overlaps the respective end of each chipper, the turnup end of the ply, and the radially outermost part of each flipper. The shearing modulus of the nylon material of each flippers and each patch is intermediate between the shearing moduli of the adjacent materials, which thus distributes and absorbs shearing stresses in ways that reduce the tendency of the turnup ends and the radial most part of the chippers to separate from the adjacent tire structures during heavy-duty operation.

  • Patent number: 4896709
Abstract: The invention relates to a pneumatic radial carcass type tire for heavy duty use having an improved reinforcing structure for the bead region. In a tire comprising a four ply radial carcass (1), the two bead regions are each reinforced by a bead core (2) and an axially inner (6) and an axially outer (7) textile reinforcing layer and a rubber apex strip (8). As compared to the prior art, the relatively low rubber apex strip (8) and the resulting low separation point between the first (3) and second (4) set of carcass plies reduces the sheer stresses between these carcass plies while the specific arrangement of the axially inner (6) and axially outer (7) textile reinforcing layers, retains the required stiffness in the bead region (5). In a preferred embodiment of the invention the axially inner (6) and axially outer (7) textile reinforcing layers comprise square woven fabric which help towards reducing the ply waviness of both the reinforcing layers (6,7) and the carcass plies (3,4).

A particular durable bead region (5) is thus obtained.

  • Patent number: 4667722
Abstract: A radial tire having a carcass ply (17) with an inside-to-outside turn-up portion (19) around each bead (13). In each bead portion (11) there is included a reinforcing ply 22 having portions (22A,22B) on each axial side of the bead (13). The axially outer portion (22A) adjacent each turn-up portion (19), and optionally the turn-up itself, extends radially outwardly of the bead (13), and the axially inner portion (22B) extends radially outwardly to terminate at a point (S) located on a line (Q--Q) which is substantially perpendicular to the carcass ply (17) and passing through the radially outermost end (R) of axially outer portion (22A), or the radially outermost end (U) of the carcass ply turn-up (19).
