    Abstract: A telecommunications system provides mobile communications to mobile user equipment and includes an internet protocol access network and a cellular mobile radio network. The mobile user equipment activates a connection on the cellular mobile radio network using the packet switched communications channel whilst receiving a communications service via the internet protocol access network. The mobile user equipment communicates via the connection on the packet-switched channel of the cellular mobile radio network in response to a handover event from the internet protocol access network to the cellular mobile radio network.

    Abstract: A telecommunications system having a plurality of access networks, each of which can provide a facility for mobile terminals to communicate data in accordance with a communications service when in a coverage area provided by the access networks. The telecommunications system includes a mobility manager which receives network evaluation messages from a mobile terminal which provide an indication of a quality of communications available via a communications link with one or more of the plurality of access networks, which are currently available for communicating data. The mobility manager identifies one of the access networks with which the mobile terminal should be affiliated for communicating the data via a communications link provided with the access network based on an amount of power, which the mobile terminal may consume when communicating via the identified access network, and communicates an instruction to the mobile terminal to change affiliation to the identified access network.

    Abstract: This invention relates to methods for controlling a mobile node in a data communications network. A mobile node may include different radio interfaces for communicating user data traffic and mobility protocol data traffic via different radio access technologies. One radio interface may be preferentially selected over another radio interface for the purpose of communicating user data traffic, in response to a trigger indicating that there is a change in the user data traffic to be communicated, whilst there remains mobility protocol data traffic to be communicated. This allows the continued communication of mobility protocol data traffic, for example to maintain a registration condition of a mobile node, whilst avoiding wastage of power resources on the mobile node. The power to each of the radio interfaces may be switched according to the amount of user data traffic being communicated to and from an application running on the mobile node.
