  • Patent number: 6494254
Abstract: A tube for a heat exchanger consists of a folded metal strip having an outer face covered with a plating of brazing alloy (31) and including at least one folded border (28) having a sheared edge bearing on an inner face (34) of the metal strip. The metal strip is folded by passing through a series of successive rollers. The sheared edge is covered with a layer of brazing alloy (31) which has advantageously been pushed back by the rollers from the outer surface towards the sheared edge. According to the method, the metal strip is made to pass between a series of rollers, each roller including a surface which exhibits an inclination with respect to the rotational axle of the rollers, the inclinations of the successive rollers continually increasing.

  • Publication number: 20020020522
Abstract: The invention relates to a tube for a heat exchanger, consisting of a metal strip having an inner face and an outer face, this strip having two extremities which are folded locally towards the inner face of the tube so as to form two borders (28, 30) placed one beside the other. Passages (38) are formed in at least one of the extremities of the metal strip for introduction of a brazing flux. These passages (38) can be formed in the two extremities of the metal strip, and offset with respect to one another. The passages extend over a distance greater than the height of the borders (28, 30) in such a way as to form an inlet (40) for the brazing flux.

  • Patent number: 6230533
Abstract: A folded tube for a motor vehicle heat exchanger, is made from a metal strip folded on itself so as to form two parallel channels separated by a spacer. The spacer results from the joining of two borders of the strip each being folded at right angles towards the inside of the tube from an outer face. Each of the borders is folded at right angles with respect to the outer face, forming a folded outer edge, and includes a protruding swelling which extends at least on the same side as the outer face of the strip. The invention makes it possible to produce a tube having flat large faces, the continuity of which is assured in the regions close to the spacer and which contributes to better holding of corrugated spacers in the heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 5785115
Abstract: A fixing lug provided on a fluid chamber of the heat exchanger has an elongate opening along which there is able to slide a bolt ensuring the clamping of the lug on a receiving lug. This sliding enables the heat exchanger to expand without mechanical stress.

  • Patent number: 5697429
Abstract: A heat exchanger has a header in the form of a stack consisting of pairs of shells, with the two shells of each pair being assembled together through their outer flanges, and with two adjacent shells, each belonging to a different pair, being joined together through annular inner flanges which are joined to the outer flanges of the shells through annular side walls. The outer flanges of the two shells of each pair, which define a housing for the end of an associated flattened fluid flow tube, also bear on the faces of a turbulator plate which projects out of the corresponding tube. The contact of the shells with the turbulator plate improves the rigidity of the header. The invention is applicable to the cooling of supercharging air in industrial vehicle engines.

  • Patent number: 5676200
Abstract: The heat exchanger of the invention comprises a header plate which has a wall in which there are holes suitable for receiving the ends of tubes in a bank, the wall of the header plate forming collars around holes and having a localised thinning (A) in a chosen area surrounding each collar to allow an axial movement of the collar with respect to the rest of the header plate under the effect of variations in the length of the tube arising from differences in thermal expansion. Application notably to exchangers for booster air for turbocharged engines in motor vehicles.

  • Patent number: 5649516
Abstract: A pivoting flap valve, controlled by a pneumatic main actuator or actuating jack through an engagement means or connecting piece and a lever coupled to the valve, controls the changeover between a state in which supercharging air is delivered to the engine through a cooling radiator and a state in which it is delivered directly, according to the temperature of the air. The control device includes, besides the main actuator, two auxiliary or safety actuators or release jacks, carrying thrust pieces which cooperate with the connecting piece, or stop block, so as to prevent the ram of the main actuator from being extended. The flap valve is therefore unable to be put in a position such that the supercharging air bypasses the cooling radiator.

  • Patent number: 5634519
Abstract: A heat exchanger comprises a bundle of tubes mounted between two fluid headers, each of which comprises a stack of shell members fitted together in pairs. Each shell member has a closed side wall which is joined to a flat outer flange and a flat inner flange. The inner flange defines an axial aperture, while the side wall of each shell member defines a lateral aperture having a cross section matching one half of the transverse cross section of a tube of the bundle. The shell members are assembled in pairs so as to define an internal chamber extending over the whole height of the stack, with each tube end being received in an aperture consisting of the two side apertures, joined together, of two adjacent shell members. The heat exchanger of the invention is applicable for example to the cooling of a high temperature air stream from a vehicle turbo charger.

  • Patent number: 5492172
Abstract: A header plate, which forms one wall of the internal space of a fluid header for a cooling radiator for air used in supercharging a motor vehicle engine, has apertures through which the fluid flow tubes of the heat exchanger extend. These apertures are formed in an elongated flat region of the header plate, which is joined to raised side flanges through respective curved regions. The material of the header plate is press-formed, on the same side as the concavity of these curved regions, in zones which are aligned in the transverse direction of the header plate and which extend over at least the whole length of arc of each of the curved regions. The deformation resulting from this press-forming operation causes local thickening of the material, which reinforces the plate in its curved regions and inhibits any tendency to fracture along the generatrices of the curved regions due to mechanical and thermal stresses encountered in operation.
