  • Patent number: 7654098
Abstract: A system includes a scroll compressor having a first scroll member interleaved with a second scroll member to define at least two moving fluid pockets that decrease in size as they move from a radially outer position to a radially inner position. A valve in fluid communication with the compression chamber is movable between an open state allowing fluid to the compression chamber and a closed state preventing fluid to the compression chamber. A controller continuously cycles the valve between the open state and the closed state at a rate that is faster than a thermal time constant of a load on the system.

  • Patent number: 7419365
Abstract: A compressor includes an orbiting member and a non-orbiting member mounted relative the orbiting member to define first and second chambers disposed between the orbiting and non-orbiting members. The non-orbiting member forms a seal to generally prevent fluid communication between the first and second chambers when in a first position and breaks the seal to allow fluid communication between the first and second chambers when in a second position. A structure supports the orbiting and non-orbiting members for relative orbital movement therebetween and a time pulsed actuation apparatus is coupled to the structure and configured to selectively break the seal.

  • Patent number: 7389649
Abstract: A control system for a cooling system includes a first sensor for sensing a property indicative of demand for cooling and a controller coupled to the sensor. The controller produces the variable duty cycle control signal in response to the property and causes the compressor and valve to vary a cooling capacity of the cooling system in response to the variable duty cycle control signal. The sensor may sense the pressure, temperature, or both. The valve may be a suction-side pressure regulator or a liquid-side expansion valve of the solenoid or stepper type.

  • Publication number: 20080053136
Abstract: A method includes operating a compressor of a heat pump system and is selectively providing vapor to a vapor injection port of the compressor via a vapor injection line and vapor injection valve. The method further includes determining a frost condition of a first and second heat exchanger of the heat pump system and closing a vapor injection valve to prevent fluid flow into the compressor at the vapor injection port. A direction of refrigerant flow is reversed to direct vaporized refrigerant to the one of said first and second heat exchangers experiencing the frost condition. The vapor injection valve is opened after a first predetermined time period following reversal of the refrigerant flow. The method further includes closing the vapor injection valve and reversing a direction of refrigerant flow within the heat pump system once the vapor injection valve is closed for a second predetermined time period.

  • Publication number: 20080047292
Abstract: A method includes operating a compressor with a vapor injection system and selectively supplying vapor to the compressor during compressor operation through actuation of a first control valve. The method further includes closing the first control valve to prevent vapor from entering the compressor for a first predetermined time period leading up to stopping operation of the compressor and stopping the compressor with the first control valve in the closed position. The compressor is started with the first control valve in the closed position and the first control valve is maintained in the closed position for a second predetermined time period following starting of the compressor. The first control valve is opened to supply vapor to the compressor after the second predetermined time period.

  • Patent number: 6412293
Abstract: An improved continuous capacity modulation system for scroll-type compressors is disclosed in which a valve body of a solenoid valve assembly is secured to the inner wall of the hermetic shell and the actuating coil is mounted on the outer surface thereof. The actuating coil includes a plunger/valve member which cooperates with passages provided in the valve body to selectively actuate the capacity modulation arrangement utilizing compressed fluid. The construction offers the advantage that all fluid pressure lines are located within the hermetic shell and thus protected from potential damage, the solenoid coil may be easily changed/replaced to accommodate different available operating voltages and/or malfunction thereof and the system can be easily tested prior to final welding of the outer shell. The actuating coil is controlled by Pulse Width Modulation to reduce the load demand of the compressor during times when load shedding is required.

  • Patent number: RE40830
Abstract: A pulsed modulated capacity modulation system for refrigeration, air conditioning or other types of compressors is disclosed in which suitable valving is provided which operates to cyclically block flow of suction gas to a compressor. A control system is provided which is adapted to control both the frequency of cycling as well as the relative duration of the on and off time periods of each cycle in accordance with sensed system operating conditions so as to maximize the efficiency of the system. Preferably the cycle time will be substantially less than the time constant of the load and will enable substantially continuously variable capacity modulation from substantially zero capacity to the full capacity of the compressor. Additional controls may be incorporated to modify one or more of the motor operating parameters to improve the efficiency of the motor during periods of reduced load.
